To jump start Photkina next month, it looks like Nikon takes the early lead with new product offerings:

D3100 and 4 new lenses (85mm f/1.4 prime and 3 telephotos)

Interesting, I wonder how their 85mm f/1.4 will shape up to Sigma's Almost released 85mm f/1.4.

I am not very impressed with the D3100. Other than the video and live view, they really didn't improve much. The MP increase is not that much and really not a factor IMO. For someone sold on an entry level Nikon, I still think the D5000 is better. Maybe the reviews will reveal something the specs are not showing, but overall I do not think they changed enough. Also, at least at the start the D5000 will be cheaper.

I'm still new to the DSLR world. I have a Nikon D40 with the kit 18-55mm lense and a 55-200mm lens. I'm wanting to get one good walk-around lens to replace both of these. I've been looking at the Nikon 18-200mm lens, which is $850. Would you recommend getting this or the new 24-300mm lens for $1070? Obviously you'd have more zoom, but any other advantage for that much more $$$?

Thanks for your advice!

I would suggest that the decision between the two lens boils down to a shooting preference. They have the same relative speed from an f stop perspective. The 18-200 would effectively be a 24-300 and the 24-300 would be 36-450 on a dx body. (not really but would seem like it). They appear to be around the same size.

So it boils down to what you use the most. I find that I like the wider angles than the telephoto as a "what I shoot most".

Try to figure out what you take more pictures of then that should help you decide.

I would also make the comment that you can find many used great quality 18-200 lens second hand for much less than the retail of either of them. The new one will probably harder to get at first as well. Just something to think of!

Where would you recommend for used lenses? I just found a Nikon factory refurbed 18-200 for $624 on Adorama. They are reputable, aren't they? I've only ordered new from Wolf and B&H before.

Thanks so much! I've been eyeing the 18-200 for awhile. Since I'm a beginner and not a really serious photographer, I think that it will fit my needs just fine. Especially if I can get it used or refurbed for $200 less than new! We are going to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons National Parks next June. I mainly want to get the new lens and be comfortable with it before that trip. My goal is to shoot great pics of wildlife from a safe distance. I don't want to miss a shot because of fumbling with multiple lenses.

Thanks for all of your help! I always know that I can come here for good advice!

200 mm is VERY short for wildlife. You might consider sigma's Bigma 50-500mm or their 150-500mm, but both are more expensive, about a grand each, or $1600 for the Optically Satablized version of the Bigma.

Most of these were done with a bigma at a Safari Park http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=20331&id=1785222954&l=b6a8276d

Thanks, Albert, for your input. I tried to look at your pictures, but it said the public link had expired . I'm sure that they are amazing! There are so many phenomenal photographers on this board.:worship: However, I do think that my husband might divorce me if I spent $1600 on a lens :scared1:, as I would have to have image stabilization. Just kidding about the divorce part, but he wouldn't be happy! Just over a year ago, all I had was a $350 Canon point and shoot, so I have to take baby steps in acquiring new equipment. :rolleyes1

If you are looking for a DSLR, try www.Adorama.com, they sell canon bodies refurbished with a one year warrantee, and adorama is one of the big names in camera stuff.

I'm glad my wife doesn't know quite how much I spend either! :) I just picked up the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS II for $2500, but I can sell my old 70-200 IS f/2.8 (not a second revision) for $1500. And if you didn't catch that, yes, it cost me a grand to upgrade from the old to the newest revision of the same lens! :)

WOW! Those pics are fabulous! Thanks for sharing - your photos and your equipment advice!

Have you ever considered renting a bigger lens?

Last fall, I rented a 400mm f/2.8 IS for my Canon to shoot a pair of high school football games. That's a ~7000 lens (which incidentally, my DW WOULD divorce me in about two shakes if I bought)......but the rental fee was under $400 and I had it for 10 days.

Give www.borrowlenses.com a shot. I have also heard incredibly good things about www.lensrentals.com

I've toyed with getting the Canon 100-400 IS zoom (~1500) for my Animal Kingdom lodge trip this fall, but I can rent it for ~$100 for my trip. Seeing as how I will only use it sparingly, I think I'll do that and maybe even rent a fisheye or an ultra-wide angle. By saving the money, I will probably invest the difference in a new camera body (I have an old 300D).

At the very least, renting the lens will allow you to try a lens out before you buy it - make sure it will do what you want.
