Rumors have been leaked (apparently out of Germany) that a new Nikon dSLR is going to be released soon. It will be the D40. Basically a steped down version of the D50. looks to be about the size of the Canon XT. Not very many features. 6MP, 2 1/2" LCD, AF-S compatible only (no in camera focus which is used with AF lenses). Will take SD cards. Price looks to be about $499 body only.

I'm not sure about this camera. Since it wont be compatible with AF lenses, that means most of the primes are out, ie: 50mm f/1.8. Also a lot of the 3rd party lenses are out. Sigma makes HMS lenses, but not a whole lot of them.

Target audience seems to be those in the bridge camera range or those who may be intimidated by slr's and all the lenses but still want better ISO performance. 2 lenses, maybe 1 are all that you'll really need. 18-55mm & 55-200mm or 18-135mm & 70-300mm or just the 18-135mm or just the 18-200mm. Mostly because lens selection will be very small.
