an elderly couple( in their 80s and not real computer literate) i know recently got a nikon d70 and can't get anything they take to open on their computer. they thought it was their cd drive but don't know if their son installed any software when they got the camera.. i tried burning a cd for them ( jpeg) but they can't get that open either so before i trek over to lend a hand, could you fill me in( as a canonite) on the nikon software? Thanks

They way the camera software operates isn't going to be crazy different. If you don't want to fiddle around with the software, the camera should show up as an extra portable drive if you go under My Computer. There should be an icon or drive for the camera. You should be able to drag and drop from that to any file on the hard drive.

If you use the camera's software just go under any place that says transfer. I don't know for sure if the D70 uses Picture Perfect or not. If it does it is very easy to use. There is a big button on the top left that says transfer. Once there just browse to find the file you/they want the pictures to be transfered to.

As for opening any JPEG's if it doesn't open with at least some sort of picture software that may be on the computer, it should open with Window's Picture Viewer. You can also open JPEG's with Internet Explorer.

thanks...i was hoping it would be easy since canon has i think 3 different picture type programs with the rebel i wasn't sure what the nikon would have..they can open email but that 's about all so i was hoping there was a fairly easy editing program they could use...( and i could figure out to show them how to use it :rotfl2: )

also lots of his pictures are way underexposed, like enough that you can't really make out facial details... the only thing i see in the metadata is exposure bias set at 0.00 he had it all at av priority, auto balance, auto exposure, pattern metering. so is there anything that blinks or something if the exposure is wrong( on the camera i mean) that i could some how tell him to look for?( my devious plan is ask to see it and say oh look it's nice ____ goes off when it's exposed right) his memory is not that sharp but maybe if he looked at something he'd remember it

I would have them keep the camera on AUTO. If its on aperture priority all the time then they will have issues. Best then based on your description is to keep it on auto or P. At least with auto they don't have to worry about setting ISO and in indoors the flash will pop up automatically if its needed.

thanks, the limited modes would be a good idea, i don't know if i can get him to go all auto but maybe p...he really loves to take snapshot type pictures( i've known him 10 yrs and don't think i've ever seen him at a gathering minus camera) but i kind of think this is more camera than he can handle due to his memory problems etc...but the p would be good, he can change some things but still get a decent shot :rotfl2: if not well, they are his pictures so i guess i don't need to worry about them :rotfl: :rotfl:

You could DL Picasa for them. You can go in and set it up so that when the camera connects to the PC it will automatically comes up and ask if they want to transfer. Picasa is an easy program to use.

Picasa
Also here is a Nikon site that has a lot of very knowledgeable Nikon people.

did you get the slide show via email, otherwise you might want to check to see who in your house is surfing where they shouldn't be, such things don't just magically appear on your pc, just because you have picassa

What operating system are they using?
Since Windows XP we've gotten used to the OS having all of this great stuff built in (USB Drivers, automatically recognizing cameras as drives, Jpeg viewers) but it wasn't all that long ago that systems needed a bit of configuration and 3rd party programs in order for all that stuff to work together.
XP has become so prevalent that when we hear "computer" we automatically think "XP"
Just a thought...

yes in came via email and no we don't go to "that kind " of sites or i probably wouldn't have been surprised to get it now would i have? the fact a stranger could send something to my email address via picasa did not make me happy. it also made me wonder how secure any photos i put on it might be.

extreme8, that is a thought about the windows they are using. i don't know how old theirs is but i do have a friend that just upgraded from windows 95 so i guess it never hurts to ask :teeth:

I have never gotten any slideshows from strange people, other the boB :)

the point I was trying to make is..I don't think anything can be sent to your email via picassa,, it may have been spammed to your email account and once on your pc, picassa openes it, but having picassa had nothing to do with how it originally got on your computer...

and you'd be surprised how many people get surprises like that and are even more surpised to find out that someone in their household does visit those sites..or someone could be redirected to that type of site while doing a legitimate search for a clean site.

I wasn't implying that anyone in your house does, but it's a real question to be asked anytime that sort of material ends up on a pc...

I'm closing this thread as requested by the original poster. It has morphed into a discussion far different than had been anticipated.
