Nikon D5000 or ???

Calling all photographers...

My DH and I are getting a couple gift this Christmas and are almost clueless as to which camera to get. I have had several very nice point and shoot camera that take phenonomenal pictures outdoors, but I am still hunting a camera that takes very good indoor pictures.

Biggest question...The Nikon SLR D5000 is what we are looking at and it is a big chunk of change! The MAIN reason we are looking at a new camera is to get action shots at basketball games, cross country meets, etc. Our boys participate in both and the shots we take are ALWAYS blurry.

Any hints??? Thank you!!

It's not about the camera body, it's about the lenses.

A "fast" lens is one that has a large aperture (basically the lens opening.) Large aperture lenses are more expensive. The larger the aperture, the faster you can have the shutter speed to "freeze" motion or action.

Note, the beginner Nikon dSLR cameras such as the D5000 do not have a focus motor in the body like the better models. This means, you will be more limited in lens choice because you will need to have the focus motor in the lens.

It's not as easy as asking "which camera would be better for action shots at a basketball game." To do it right, you need an understanding of photography, meaning you need to understand what aperture, shutterspeed, and ISO is all about. When you learn about this stuff, you begin to understand what the camera bodies and all the lens specifications are all about and are able to understand what you need to do to meet your expectations.

We have the Nikon D80 and I love it, but we also bought an additional lens made for those fast shots and I think the lens ran between $700 and $800.

If you haven't had DSLR before, the Nikon D3000 could be a good start, no?
