Nikon D50, Time to upgrade, any suggestions?

I bought my wife a Nikon D50 about 8 years ago, and while it still works, it is outdated and awful heavy.

I have several lense for it.

Would like to get her another Nikon whereas we can use the same lense and maybe the camera wouldn't be so heavy.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

First, I am not a Nikon shooter, however I do follow all the major brands. Since your camera is 8 years old, the only limiting factor is your budget. You didn't list your lenses, so I will make an assumption that you want to stick with APS-C vs Full Frame. The top of the line Nikon APS-C is now the D7100. They just introduced the latest mid-grade D5300. If those are out of your price range, that you may want to look at last year's model the D5200. The current entry level is the D3200. I know that there are certain lenses which will work only on certain cameras, but I will leave that to the Nikon shooters. Also, you didn't state how you use your camera. That would help towards someone making a recommendation.

Thanks for the reply. I know zero about cameras. I know less about the lens either then it cost about 500 and it zooms pretty good.All we ( my wife ) uses it for is to take pictures of the kid.

When you are using a DSLR system the one major limiting factor is your investment in lenses and accessories. If you have a bunch of good lenses then it only makes sense to stay within the same system. You or the DW can look at a comparison of Nikon at a website like www.dpreview.com. They have a very good comparison tool to ascertain the options you require for the camera body. I would also recommend that when you think you have decided which one you want, that you go to a camera store and hold the cameras. There is something to be said for ergonomics. Sometimes the camera just isn't comfortable for your hands. Try not to get stressed and enjoy the ride.

The entry level D3200, 5200, 5300 won't have a focus motor like her D50 so if she has lenses without a focus motor(which are mostly older lenses) they won't auto focus on these bodies. The D7000, 7100 would be the latest upgrade to her D50 and do have the focus motor but they will be similar in size and weight to her D50. I started with the D50 too The newer lenses that will auto focus on the entry level Nikons have AF-S on the barrel where it says Nikkor and has the other specifics on the lens. Example, my kit lens AF-S Nikkor 18-135mm 3.5 5.6G ED.
