I thought I'd chime in with what I've been using. I don't have any experience with the 18-200 so I can't tell you anything about it. However, I think you really should consider the 80-200 F2.8 lens. I have been using mine for almost all of my action photos and I've been more than pleased with it.
Yes, it is a chunk of glass but I like the extra weight for panning. Here's a couple of photos I took with it of it:
If you're looking for a mid range lens, I really dig the 24-120 VR
It's a little extra weight compared to the "kit" lens but I find I use this lens more when venturing off in the parks.
