Hi - In another thread, someone mentioned a safari ride that starts at 10 pm and goes for about an hour. You have to be a guest at AKL to do it. I booked it, but would appreciate reviews if anyone has been on it!

Thanks!

I'd just be thinking about the documentaries I've seen from Africa.... the night hunt.:crutches:

I've never heard of this. How much is it? Do you have to be Club Level to do it? And where do I call about booking it?

Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge has introduced a new nighttime safari tour on the Sunset Savanna exclusively for guests of the Lodge.

Taking place after dark, the hour long tour takes guests through the savanna for a close-up look at the animals. Night vision goggles add to the excitement.

The cost is $70 per guest for ages 8 and up. There is a 10 guest maximum, with tours taking place Wednesday and Saturdays at 10pm.

That sounds awesome! I hope they still have it when our kids are old enough for Simba's clubhouse (since it will be 8+ years until they are both old enough for the safari itself). That would be nice to do dinner and then the safari!

I was told that it starts at AKV at 10:00 pm.

If you are staying at AKL and don't have a car, is there a safe way to get to/from AKV at that time of night?

I haven't been there yet, so I don't know how safe someone would feel walking between AKV and AKL at that hour.

Oooh! This sounds cool. I'm guessing you can book starting at 180 days out?

The walking at that hour of the night is my main concern also, especially since I'll be solo. But now I'm a little confused-does it both start and end at Kidani? I thought (I don't know why I assumed) that it started and ended at Jambo, but if it's Kidani, no problem! That's where I'll be staying, so I don't have to walk.

I just noticed something when checking this. It was dated October, 2012. Well, I was at AKV in November, 2012, and although I checked the resort activity offerrings carefully, I saw no mention of this tour the entire week I was there. Can anyone verify that this tour exists now (maybe it started after the date of the article).

I have good friends who are DVC members and took this tour with their 2 twins (13 year old boys) in April. They loved it. Yes, it starts late, so best if you stay at the Lodge. And it is at Jambo. Kids loved the night vision goggles. One interesting thing I didn't know - the animals stay out 18-20 hours each day, but they do have places to take them indoors, if the animals prefer.

I've seen this tour advertised since we bought in at AKL several years ago.

Actually this tour is not at Jamob. We have booked it for August it is at Kidani at 10pm and finishes at 11 pm. You need to be careful if you are staying at Jambo as the shuttle from Kidani to Jambo I'd finished by that time.

Thanks for the correction. I've always seen it advertised at Jambo, but my friends were staying at Kidani when they took the tour. I just thought they walked over to Jambo. :flower3:

We were told to meet at sanaa, kidani at 9:45. We are staying at jambo, not afraid of the walk at all.

I did this tour in March. It meets at Sanaa at around 9:45 and leaves at 10:00. There you board a truck in the front of the Kidani lobby and they drive you around the back to the Sunset Savannah. You only go through the Sunset Savannah. Each person is provided with night vision goggles. You drive very slowly and if any animals are near, they do stop. On our safari, 3 giraffes were hanging out near the Jambo Sunset lounge overlook and we stopped very close to them and got to observe for quite a while.

Since we had such a close encounter, our safari was wonderful! I have also done Wayama, and I actually liked this better. ON that one, they go through 3 savannahs, but really don't stop.

WHen the tour is done, they drop you off in front of the Kidani entrance.

Who do we call for booking information? We are staying in Kidani with our animal loving DGD next month!

OK..I called up the AK Lodge's excursion planning number. 407-938-4755 and they got back to me. It is available for our trip next month. I need to find out if this DGD could stay up that late.
