We are leaving in 25 days and my 2 year old niece has been exposed to chicken pox . She was first exposed a week ago so it's already been 7 days. I suppose only time will tell if she breaks out. But here's the real kicker!!! She has an older brother who is 3 1/2 :crazy2:. Plus....my sister is also 5 months pregnant! Sooo, I guess my niece could break out as early as Friday but my nephew could be later.

Throw some pixie dust my way!

Most kids have been vaccinated against Chicken Pox around here--maybe they got their shots, too?

If she has the vaccine it should work. One of my girls got chicken pox because she wasn't vaccinated (long story on why one was and one wasn't) and the other one was. The one that got the vaccine didn't break out at all.

Additionally, if she/they do break out (except for the pregnant one I'm not sure about that) take them to the doctor IMMEDIATELY as they can give them an antiviral medication called acyclovir. It is important to get the medication within 24 hours of the first sign. The medication lessens the breakout and speeds up the process. My daughter didn't complain about itching once and she had them BAD. I didn't even use any topical medications on the spots. Also, she was completely dried up in 7 days due to the medication.

Good luck!!

Hi - just a warning - not necessarily home-free if your child had the vaccine. My son was vaccinated when he was 2..he is now 4 and is just getting over the chicken pox. His back was covered, but not too itchy at all, and they cleared up really fast. (I think I was more itchy-the power of suggestion is amazing). They can still get it...often just less potent!

I think the big worry is for the Mom - has she had the chicken pox? If not, she'd better contact her OB ASAP!

Given the time line, they could be over it by then if they get it at all. (hopefully they can ward it off...)

Also, my oldest ds got them twice. Once very mild when he was two. Then again at 10 and he was covered and sick. Headache, light sensitivity the whole nine yards. And he was generous enough to share with his then 6 month old brother who was covered, too.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you. My kids have both had them and vaccines are up to date... never thought of that angle.

Yes, mom had the chicken pox when she was a child so I think she is ok although she is planning on mentioning it to her doctor just in case.

Guess where I was diagnosed with Chicken Pox???!!!! OK you'll never guess so I'll tell you . . . First Aid in MK when I was 8 years old!! It was our first day of vacation (of course it was 1973 and MK was the only park). We stayed because we were after all at Disney World!!!!! No telling how many kids I exposed SORRY! I was 8 and didn't make that call.:confused3

at her summer camp. The Dr. gave us a 10 day incubation period - so hopefully you'll be in the clear in a couple of days - well before your trip! Have a great time! :earsboy:

I came down with the chicken pox at 29 after a child spit on me at school... DD 9 months at the time came down with them 2 weeks later.. Crossing my fingers for you!

The Dr. gave us a 10 day incubation period - so hopefully you'll be in the clear in a couple of days - well before your trip!
The incubation period (time from first exposure until you might begin coming down with symptoms) is 10 to 21 days, so the 10 days your doctor gave you is the first day you might expect to see symptoms, not the last day. So, start looking for symptoms 10 days after exposure. If there are no symptoms after 21 days, you didn't get chickenpox from that exposure.
The first symptoms are often cold-like, then the rash begins to appear. It first looks like bug bites, kind of red, raised bumps without any blister. Over the course of 12-24 hours, small fluid filled blisters appear on top of the red bumps. These eventually break and the lesions form a crust.
Someone with chicken pox can spread it to others from 1-2 days before any symptoms begin until all the spots have crusted over. Kids with chickenpox usually feel pretty good (except for the itching) once the rash begins to break out.
The chickenpox vaccine does a good (but not perfect) job of preventing chickenpox after exposure. If people who did have the vaccine get chickenpox anyway, it tends to be a milder case. It is possible to get chickenpox more than once, but doesn't happen that often. When it does, it's usually people who had a mild case of chickenpox the first time, or had it before they were 2 years old (the immune system was not fully geared up when they got it).
If you do want to request Acyclovir from your doctor, do call and talk to the nurse or doctor before going to the office with your child. Chickenpox is spread thru the air, so they may want to call in a prescription without seeing your child or have you come directly into an exam room. If you are sitting out in the waiting room, everyone who is in there at the time and for a while after will be exposed to chickenpox.
the pregnant woman who was exposed to chickenpox should talk to her doctor, but she is most likely immune (has had the disease and is unlikely to get it again). If she doesn't remember having chickenpox in the past, her doctor may do a clood test to check whether or not she is immune.
Here's a link to chickenpox information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Keep in mind that they are trying to encourage the vaccine, so they do have "worst case scenario" information about chickenpox.

In 1994, my DD was exposed 5 DAYS before our scheduled trip to WDW. I was a total wreck! A little girl in her nursery school actually barfed right on my DD, the next day the teacher said "guess what? ***** has broke out with chicken pox!" I called the dr. he said there wasn't much we could do except watch my DD and let whatever happens run it's course. What to do! Cancel non-refundable plane tickets? Cancel the trip? If we go do we keep her at least 10 ft from others? Anyway, we decided we couldn't cancel the trip, there was already too much money invested. Anyway, She NEVER broke out, no fever, she was just fine. I was so thankful!

Just an update.....no chicken pox yet! It has been more than 10 days now so hopefully that means she's in the clear. We leave in 18 days am I'm still keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks for all your stories, encouragement and pixie dust thrown my way!! Keep throwing though!

No fever, headaches, anything? Phew! You may have just dodged that one!:Pinkbounc

Have a good trip - 14 days for us! :hyper2:
