Niece and the Border

Hi gang,

Hubby and I want to take my niece to WDW on our own without her parents next year as a treat. Other than a notarized letter is there anything else we need to get her across the borders South and back across North?

And yes my brother and sister in law are more than happy to let us take her hahahah they are getting a break

i think that should do it , thats what we did-- although many years ago. i found a template that i typed up online under passports i believe. it must state dates you leave, where you are staying, contact info of parents.
i then took the letter to notary who signed it, i think it cost 30.

I have taken my niece across several times. I have had her passport of course and a letter from my sister and DBIL -HOwever, I have never been asked to show the letter. I still think it is a must to have one though.

We had a notarized letter for our niece.
Not once, were we asked for it or were we questioned about her.
They checked her passport at the Buffalo border and when we boarding/disembarking form the cruise ship.
Other than the notarized letter and her passport, you won't require anything else.

A few times we brought along various daughters of cousins of mine to act as baby sitters while DW and I attended a conference while in Orlando etc. In all cases, the girls shared my last name, so it all looked like one single family together for the ride, though I did say 'this 5 of us are from Mississauga and she is from London'. Was never asked for anything else, including letter and a couple times we forgot one entirely.
No problems at the border for us.

My sister in law joked that I could claim to be her mother since we have the last name and have such similar features but we know that won't fly. there's my hubby to factor in who it's obvious isn't the father as he has some Asian blood and my niece doesn't. ((don't worry she wasn't serious about the mother thing for those of you who may come down hard on that joke)) She will be 14 by then so I am not concerned about too many questions since she isn't a young child but I don't want any hassle either.

Make sure you have travel health insurance for her. When we took my niece and nephew to WDW a couple of years ago we bought this for them through CAA. DH and I have it through our work but this obviously won't cover children from a different household. Also take their provincial medical insurance cards. Hopefully if you are prepared for a medical incident you won't need it!!!

Just a photocopy.....these cards are not valid outside of Canada. If you were to lose it it would be a total pain to get a new one.

A friend of mine had her wallet stolen in Europe and when she got back and was trying to replace all her lost items...SIN, Health card etc....Services Canada told her she never should have been travelling with all these items as you have zero need for them outside of Canada.

No point in taking provincial medical cards -- they mean nothing in the US. As for medical; that is my brother's responsibility and we are avid travelers so we are good there but thanks for the reminder for those who don't think of it

Exactly -- i don't even carry my SIN in my wallet in Canada; let alone traveling.
