My daughter's name is Abigail. I don't want her to have Abbey as a nickname. We call her birdie. That's the only nickname we want, but we don't need to tell the general public what our nickname for her is. (Even though I just told all of you.) Our friends call her birdie, but if someone would actually take the time to ask if she had a nickname we could tell them . We thought the Abbey thing would be cute before she was born, but once we had her everyone started calling her Abbey. We nipped that in the bud with our friends and families, but no matter where we go someone will ask what her name is and I will introduce her as Abigail and 9 times out of 10 they will say "hi Abbey". It drives me nuts. When people introduce themselves or their children to me, I call them whatever they introduced themselves as. Does anyone else have this problem when introducing themselves or someone else. I'm not looking for a debate, just wondering if it bothers anyone else like it does me. o.k. I'm done rambling:teeth:

My ds's name is Dakota. He hates to be called Cody. He'll totally ignore you if you call him that.:p

My kids will correct you if you dont call them by their nickname. They are called that in school and by all family members. I wonder if they know their real names:p :p

My oldest DS is named Jonathan. I never wanted him to be nicknamed Jon, but, of course, teachers and kids at school have started calling him Jon. It drives me nuts, but he doesn't mind.

My name is Jennifer.
I don't care what you call me - but if you call me "jenny"...I won't respond. I prefer Jenn. If you say "jennifer" I think I'm in trouble.

We have a friend who has a son, Vincent.
Of course we shorten it to Vinny...but the mom still calls him Vincent.

Another friend has a son, Nicholas.
the world would stop if you called him Nick. (we actually call him Niko)

If you don't like it - say something. Ultimately, your DD might WANT to go by Abbey when she's older. I think that's a decision she has to make...it's her name.

my kids don't have nicknames. They're just Eric and Christian - to their friends, family and school.

My niece KC has always gone by her initials....I actually have to stop and think what her real name is-Karen. :D

If I ever move Im gonna tell everyone one I have a cool nick name like "python" or somthing like that

DD is Catherine and people try to call her Cathy or Caty or some other variation. She will correct them and say her name is Catherine.

She does have a nickanme than only DH and I call her. It is also our 'code name'.

My name is really hard to shorten to anything. Laurie. I had a neighbor that would insist on calling me Laura though.
Kelsea I don't shorten much. Her friends call her Kel.
Kelsea couldn't say Brittany when she was little and called her Bri. Before that we called her Britt. I call her Bri now most the time.
She won't answer if anyone else calls her that. She didn't like anyone else calling her a cheese name. lol

Just posted about this on the other thread.Yeah I have a Patrick who gets called PAT all the time. But, he is now 11 and it doesnt bother him so thats up to him. I will never call him that though.
I am Kathleen, but only my mom and dad have ever called me that, when I was in trouble. Usually I am Kathy to my friends, and Kas to my family.

Since she's not even 2 yet, she knows she's Abigail. If SHE wants Abbey that's fine, but until the day she says that to me or DH, it's Abigail!

When I was naming my kids (Luke and Drew) I considered some other names first, two of my favorites was and still are Christopher and Michael. But I don't like Chris or Mike. I decided to pick names that could not be shortened for that reason. Still, though, when Luke was a baby a few people tried to call him Lukey, I put a stop to that real quick.

I did a simular thing. I chose Nicknames first, then fit first names to them.:p

I dont mind Cameron being called Cam, however I hate Cammy...to me thats a girl. MIL was the only one who ever really called him that though, so its not a problem anymore.

As for Colton, I like Colt. His friends, our neighbors, have started calling him Colty and surprisingly it doesnt bother me. Ive even found myself saying it sometimes. As he gets older I think it might sound too babyish though.

Have to say, I never really understood the fuss over nicknames. My nephew's name is Nicholas, and I call him Nik. He's not quite 2, so he doesn't care. But my brother pitches a fit when I do this. So now my nephew is usually "Nik...*glare from brother*...olas". I keep trying to tell my brother that once Nik...olas gets into school, everyone will call him Nik, and he should get used to it now.

People call me every variant of my name all the time, even though I always introduce myself as what I prefer. Doesn't bother me.

With my name (Elaine) I get quite a few nicknames... it seems most of my family and friends call me El or Lainey and I admit those are two of my favorites. I hear Ellie, Lainers, Laine, EJ and E! often as well. Admittedly I don't like two of those and actually tried to put a stop to one of them (for some reason I really just do NOT care for it) but a couple kept at it, so I let it go and they still call me that to this day.
I do introduce myself as Elaine and some friend call me that still, but I am not terribly picky about it. If I didn't have so many different names people call me, I'd pick one and go with it for all ;) In reality, I like to let people choose which name they feel most comfortable calling me.

As for others, I have a tendency to do nicknames for my close family & friends. I admit I ask if it is okay to call them that first. If I am told no, then I don't do it at all. But when I meet people for the first time, I call them by how they are introduced to me and keep at it until I am told differently.

I don't have kids yet, but I think about names a lot and have nixed a couple due off my "okay list" due to the nicknames they might get.

Well, not so sure Ryan can't be messed with! Our Ryan was called "Ry guy" when he was little. Now, if we want to irritate him, we call him that!:jester:

My name (Diane) is often shortened to "Di", but I hated it and so did my mother, so people I know well, never call me that. My dad's name is Leland, but he always goes by Lee. My mother never called him Lee though, and always called him Leland. We named our DD Cynthia, but by the time she was a few days old, it got shortened to Cindy. She just didn't seem like a Cynthia! Besides, her grandpa couldn't say it! Got his tongue tangled around the "th"! DH is a Richard, but his mother insisted he be called Dick. Now he only goes by Richard formally.
