Niagara Falls, NY

Drive down to Niagara-on-the -Lake. It's nice, small shops and walkable, and the drive there is beautiful. We've stayed at Michael's Inn(nice view) and the Clifton Hill Comfort Inn (no view but walking distance to lots of fun tacky stuff)

Thank you everyone! You have given me a lot of great ideas! I really like the boat idea, but am scared the little ones may not be able to handle it, and not sure if I want them on it, also showed DH that site last night and HE wants to do it-but he will be gone all day hhhhmmmm
I like the Fantasy amusement park, I know someone said no for it-but I think my children and I would love it. We have a six flags local, so six flags does not do much for us-only because we know we can do it all the time. We will probably spend one day on the "hill" over on the canada side (wax museum, etc) and one day on the us side-possibly the cave tour(I am deathly afraid of heights-can I do this?), maid of the mist.......then Friday at the Fantasy park.................am I forgetting anything?
As for the boat, I really want to do that-so we will figure it out-it sounds awesome!!!

I also grew up on Grand Island and spent a lot of time in Niagara Falls. It's been fun to go back with my children and being the tour director when sightseeing. I'd say that our highlights include:

American Side:
Goat Island - explore the Three Sister Islands! Small islands linked by bridges and you get right up next to the rapids. View the Horseshoe Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and American Falls from this side. Do the Cave of The Winds walk at the bottom of the American Falls - heights are not an issue, but the walkway gets slippery when wet so hang on tightly to young children. You can also do the Maid of The Mist boat ride from this side.

Have lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe - kids always love it.

Skip the Aquarium IMO.

Old Fort Niagara - Lewiston/Youngstown area. Beautiful setting for a historic fort. Many kids activities including cannon firing, cooking, etc. My kids LOVED it. I believe the jet boat ride leaves from this area aslo - we haven't done that yet.

Power Vista - free and very interesting/informative. After seeing the water intakes, reservoirs, etc. my entire life, it finally helped me understand how they harness the electricity from the Falls.

Fantasy Island - I used to work here summers during college! If you don't go expecting WDW you'll have fun. It's a small park but we've always enjoyed it. Just down the road is Kelly's Country Store - an old-fashioned general store with jars of candy on the loooong counter. You pick and choose and buy the "penny" candy by the pound. DS12 is in heaven!

Canadian Side:
Have lunch at the Skylon Tower - a revolving restaurant with amazing views. I suggest lunch because dinner is expensive.
Explore the Horseshoe Falls from this side.

Clifton Hill area - Ripley's etc. I let the kids choose one of these places.

Butterfly Conservatory - beautiful setting, very fun.

Other comments: There is a cable car across the whirlpool - I'll probably never do it, but many people like it. From what I remember of Niagara-on-the-Lake, it's a beautiful town, but won't hold much interest for the kids. Check the schedule - they do fireworks over the Falls on certain nights. If I think of anything else, I'll post it. It's an amazing sight, the Falls!

I agree with bethbuchall - I'm glad they've left the American side as a park, not all tourist-trap sights. I do however, wish they'd improve the city of Niagar Falls - what a dump! With this natural attraction there to draw tourists, you'd think they'd get their act together. It breaks my heart every time I'm there.

betbuchall - you grew up on Grand Island? I lived there from 1965-1981 in the Sandy Beach area. We only get back every few years now since most of our family is gone....

Yep...I graduated GIHS in 1982. Mom and Dad are still there, so we go back quite often. Small world, huh?

:surfweb: Hi, I live 20 mins away from Niagara Falls, NY - and have to say - (no offense to my side, but YUK!! - ever see the movie Canadian Bacon - that pretty much shows the US side - lovely factories along the shoreline near the falls - EW!! ) unless you are going to the Seneca Casino which can be a heck of a lot of fun - the Canadian side has it all. There is not much on the US side at all! When I go to the falls, I go to the Canadian side. It is so much more fun. They have this Kid package at the Marriott and you get to go to Marineland. So much shopping...so much fun.

Can anyone recommend somewhere to stay? Looking for clean, indoor/outdoor pool, and affordable :confused3 We are thinking about venturing up there in the Summer (1st week of August) and not sure what side we would stay on - Canada/USA. We would be traveling with a 5 & 6yo and other than a pool we really don't use the hotels for anything other than sleeping. Does the area get crowded during this time?

My kids have school break Apr. 5-16.

Will spring be starting to arrive at the falls by then? I'm in Saratoga (NY) area so you don't need to tell me it's still quite wintry outside - but hey, it's 47 and melting right now! :lmao:

Will some of the attractions be open by then? I know around here many things are not running until early May or even Memorial Day.

Thanks. :goodvibes

I wouldn't do Fantasy Island. As an area native. That place..is not that great. Very OLD. Six Flags was sold. But is now opening even better this year. They new have a "Wiggles" Section, instead of looney tunes. Check out their website. Go to sixflags.com and check under Darien Lake.

Well, it isn't huge, but it is clean and inexpensive. No fee for parking and you can bring in your own food and beverages (no alcohol or glass containers) The two roller coasters are quite good and while it is no WDW it isn't a haven for the usual unattended teens at six flags. Last year pretty much nothing was working at Darien Lake as a result of their corporate cutbacks so a place that is clean, no fee for parking and keeps the kids busy without being overrun by "ick", and has all rides available works well for me! BTW Fantasy Island does have a very boldly posted ban on Heelies as well, and they do enforce it as well.

Not much open on the US side until May. A few of the hotels on the Canadian side have indoor water parks and I think one onthe US side. there was a segment on the local news about them and they compared the costs and features of the locations. try wgrztv.com for that info.

Thanks, patsal. Here is a direct link to the report on the waterparks if anyone else is interested.

We were there this time last year and stayed on Canadian side in one of the Sheratons..fantastic view of the Falls.....just priceless.

We did a night also at the Great Wolf Lodge -- just 5 min. north of the falls.

We spent a few hours at the Welland Canal watching ships pass thru the locks. They have a little museum there with a viewing deck but there are a few other places to stop and park and watch ships come thru.
