The family and I went to the beach on Sat. figuring the waves would be great to boogie board on. The waves were about 2-4 feet with some a bit higher.

On Sunday...I returned with my son and folks to see the BIG waves 10-12 feet. The beach was off limits to swimmers and the Beach Patrol and lifeguards were working hard to keep everyone way back from the water line to keep them safe.

As I look at the pictures...they just don't seem to get across the awesomeness of the waves...the POWER of the water.

I hope you enjoy!

This is from Hampton State Park...right by the Jedi

The Jedi and to the right of it...if anyone knows the area...the water to the right is what goes in under the bridge

We were hoping to make it up to North Beach to watch the surfers Sunday but did make it out to the coast.

Thanks for sharing!

They are great shots. I tried to get some in Ocean City, NJ but it was too misty and everYthing came out gray. There is hope again for this weekend according to my weatherman. My 3 dream shots are lightening, a hurricane and a tornado (from a distance).

Very nice! I've never seen the getty that submerged before.

OH I have a good one I will post tomorrow. It's nice that there are people on here that actually know the area and can understand how incredible the water was.

don't know the area but a few winters ago we were in the vero beach/sebastian area when a n'oreastern came thru...it was pre digital for me ( so no photos in my computer) but the waves were huge( the spray breaking probably 4ft or so over the top of this pier.) but looked kind of "ehh" when i got them back. it was more fun being there:rotfl:

Hampton is usually so calm. Strange to see it so wild! We take the dog to Salisbury in the off season, there you get some surf but Hampton is rarely rough. I didn't get a chance to get there this summer due to DD's activities:(

Be very careful when the surf is rough. A few people were washed into the ocean up in Acadia NP in Maine this past weekend, a little girl from NY died.

My DH & his family went to Hampton on Sunday also. They were in front of & north of the bath house. Just south of your beach shots. I was looking for them in your pictures. hehehe He got the same type of shots of everyone scrambing to move chairs & towels back and tons of wave photos.

I think you actually did a better job of showing the power since he was just in that one location.

Monday, they were allowed in up to their belly buttons according to my niece.

Not sure how true this is, but my niece said that North Beach was not closed to people in the water on Sunday. I find that hard to believe.

Well...as far as North Beach not being closed...there were just no life guards up there telling people to stay out. I saw a guy try to go out in a Kayak and saw a couple of different guys go in for a quick dip. Personally...I thought they were CRAZY!!!

Great shots Dismom+two, I was hoping to get down to the coast on Sunday morning after I got out of work, but high tide was in the afternoon and I figure it wasn't worth the drive in the morning. The Jedi shot is something else, never seen it washed over, I haven't been down to HB this year yet usually stay away in the summer and only dive down as far as Rye Harbor. Great shots again, thanks for sharing.

Your welcome!! I'm glad you enjoy them!!
We only went to the beach for the first time this summer about 2 weeks ago.
Both dh and I work for schools so we have the summer off and find it much easier and less crazy getting to go in the middle of the week.

I was at Salisbury Beach for most of the day last saturday. There were lots of people at Hampton Beach. The crowds were crazy!

I have some photos. I will try to post them later. The lifeguards closed the beach an hour or so before high tide.

I was merrily taking photos and got swept away by a wave :scared1:

It was crazy! I was standingabout 10 feet away from the sand dunes which is pretty far away and a huge wave came up and took me out. The waves don't look very powerful but man, they were strong. My camera was flooded and will not work anymore but I did recover the memory card so I could download the photos. How embarrassing!! A bunch of people came to my rescue and found my sandals for me. Another woman was knocked over by the same wave so I'm glad I wasn't the only one. About 15 minutes later the lifeguards closed the beach.

At high tide the ocean waves were soo cool. Like the op said, the pictures don't show the power of the waves. you could see the rip tides forming. I don't have any photos of the waves at high tide but they were breaking right over the jetty by the mouth of the Merrimac River. The jetty was pretty much gone. THey were breaking in the middle of the river and then onto the Plum Island beach across from Salisbury. Big waves-10-15 feet high.

Even though I lost my $200 camera I'm still glad I went. We don't get hurricanes in the Northeast very often.

Sorry to hear about your camera but I'm glad you're ok.
I was thinking later that I was being pretty risky standing in some of the water...my DH would have KILLED me if I lost my camera to the waves!! I have a Nikon D60 and got it just this past christmas....I would have been so upset with myself as well.

Oh well...all is good. Just think...you get a new camera now???

Cool pics...but I"m confused. Is that "Jedi" a local name for that specific jetty? or are you meaning Jetty??? Cause the Star Wars reference really threw me off.

This is the last wave I photographed. You can see that they roll in one on top of the other and the turbulence was strong.

This is my best wave pic before the crash

this is the jetty (no star wars reference ;)) about an hour before high tide. At high tide there were no rocks left and the water was just rolling over and crashing inside the merrimac river
IMG_2398.jpg

look at all the waves in this one
IMG_2560.jpg

after this wave the mom to these boys made them move
IMG_2501.jpg

the waves were so much bigger at high tide though

We let my camera dry out for the week. I tried to turn it on again today and it's working! The menu is jumping around but there's hope. the screen is working and the flash is working. :cool1:
