NFL is nuts

When you are in a position where you are looked up to or have authority over a group of people, you will lose your job over things like this. Public companies cannot afford the backlash if they say they are going to keep someone who has done something like this.

You think a teacher or a politician could keep their job after domestic abuse charges? How has Chris Brown's reputation been affected by his actions? It's different than if John Q. Public does it. Nobody knows them.

I understand what you are saying and I don't disagree BUT, I am not so sure the "looked up to" should be a part of it. Rice plays football because he is a talented athlete (assuming here, I know nothing about the man) not necessarily because he was trying to get to a place where he is "looked up to".

We cannot or should not hold someone more accountable because some stranger looks up to that person. I think that is where WE are wrong. Athletes are not necessarily someone to look up to nor should they be. Admiring their athletic ability is fine, but very few of these athletes have "hero" qualities.

Chris Brown has done alright for himself. People may not like the man but he is still famous and he is still walking the red carpet. He has an album coming out and is supposed to be on DWTS. Doesn't seem to have been fired at all.

A teacher, well, they work directly with children so there is a definite reason why that person would lose that job.

Politicians, well I would say it all depends. I would imagine in all the years of this country, that at some point before everything was blasted all over the air waves and the internet that it has happened and they have kept their jobs.

Do we really think that football players are worse now than they were years before? I am fairly certain that OJ may have been violent at other points in his life, we were just not privy to it and for that reason, they didn't have to fire him. And its doubtful that he was the only one.

Hey Luvs,
Every year at my job you have to sign an "ethics" clause. EVERY year.
It covers diverse topics but basically it says that by virtue of your employment you reflect the company in some capacity.

You can't be a child pornagraher and say "well that was after work".
Now, we have some thing call eap (employee assistance program) so you can go to them and say I have X problem (drug, violence, alcohol) and I need help.

They will definitely get you a lot of help, but you better believe if you are arrested for domestic violence or child abuse you are going to be in a bit of a jam with the company.

I've seen guys lose their jobs for having affairs. I've seen guys lose their jobs for pornography. I've seen guys lose their jobs for animal cruelty convictions.

We are a public company, big wigs take their reputation seriously.

Heck, we had a CEO that was looked at funny cause his kid got busted importing drugs back from some where in latin America.

I think it's a byproduct of living in an age where nothing is "private" anymore. before you could be an alcoholic and people were stunned when they found out. same with a child abusers. I found out maybe 30 years after the fact that a little girl I went to elementary school had a dad who was an abuser. when I found out she said, "eliza, didn't you ever notice I never had friends over" and I really didn't.
Not today, today no matter what you do, some one sees and post. especially in a public place

And if the players in the NFL sign a code of conduct and a player does something that is within that code, then of course, the team should do whatever their policy states.

And I am not debating whether it should or shouldn't be that way at all. I am glad the guy lost his place on the team.

I was just pondering that it seems as though when these guys do something that most of us find morally wrong, we call for them to be fired but I am not so sure we would agree that Regular Joe should be fired in the same instance. If, he was breaking some code of conduct or contract, sure but short of that, I'm not so sure.

Ok. Everyone is upset the NFL didn't terminate his contract earlier. Why aren't people upset with his then fiancé who went on to marry him.

In every comments section I've read the reaction to her marrying him has been unanimous that she's an idiot and a gold digger. I can't think of a single person that hasn't been disgusted by her marrying him.

Ray Rice is a disgusting low life, but I wonder. . . would everyone support the mailman or the guy selling insurance losing his job because he hit his wife?

Should all jobs (and that is what the NFL is, a job) cross over into an employee's personal life?

Depends on how public the person is and how public the evidence is, this is the same as the Clippers owner having to sell. As the face of a company your actions can hurt the company. Had the Ravens not fired Ray Rice they'd probably be looking at a massive boycott and the loss of hundreds of millions of dollars.

If the knowledge of the incident is no longer private, then yes. There was an incident just recently of a guy who kicked a dog while riding an elevator. The video got leaked, and the backlash went viral. Turns out this guy was the CEO of a big company and after the video became public knowledge he got fired. I had never even heard of the company that he worked for, let alone the CEO.

And I'm sure not a single one of those people on those comments sections knows her, so their estimates of her intelligence or her motivation for marrying him are pretty irrelevant.

Do I think she's made a mistake by marrying him? Well, I wouldn't have done it, but I'm not going to trash her. People make mistakes, and love has probably made all of us do dumb things at one time or another.

Getting out of an abusive relationship is not easy, and is often dangerous. Many women who have been killed by their abusers were in the process of leaving when it happened. For all we know, she could have been afraid to call off the wedding.

In fact, I'm kind of worried about her now. If he blames her for the loss of his job.....I just hope she's safe.

I see Ray Lewis is coming to his defense , maybe he could get Michale Vick also, what the heck maybe Hitler will say a few good words for him also

This is also my thought as well... work and home issue should be separated. If i get a DUI, should i lose my job over it?

You likely will if your job requires you to have a valid driver's license.

Football: 4%
Basketball: 3.6%
Baseball: 1.2%
Hockey: .3%

So yes, football is worst. Though basketball is almost up there. The baseball and hockey numbers are interesting, though.

Only if the numbers posted were accurate.

The whole situation is ridiculous. I will say if someone kept hitting me like she did to him, I would eventually strike back (and I'm a female). I had heard they, she was drinking and that aftewards, she stood up for him. Now that the video has been released, has she been arrested for domestic violence for her part in the mess? I wonder how wonderful it is to be married to him now that he's not a star and does she feel somewhat responsible for his termination. I'm all for not hitting a female, but that should go both ways. It shouldn't be fair that he is in trouble for hitting her when she hit him too. I also think that unless he had signed a contract stating he would be fired for domestic violence and/or his judgement for his actions doesn't effect his playing football, this has nothing to do with his job. They let Ray Lewis keep playing for years.

I think the Ravens probably would have lost money, as other posters have said. There are plenty of people who wouldn't want to support that kind of person in any way, shape, or form.

I do also agree that there is a very fine line between one's personal life and one's professional life, and it gets blurred sometimes. But, again, I agree with other posters who say we live in an age where there is virtually no privacy, especially for people who are public figures. I imagine the NFL has something to back up the firing, be it clauses in Rice's contract or whatever.

I worry about his wife. I'd like to say I wouldn't marry the guy, but none of us know what she was feeling. Do I think it was stupid? Yes. But I'm not in her shoes. But now, that's he's out of a job...with no prospects of a new one...and likely going to have to alter his (probably) lavish lifestyle quite a bit...will he hurt her? He may see it as all her fault. We saw what he did in an elevator after an argument. What will he do after something of this magnitude? My only hope is that he feels the country is watching this woman and what might happen to her. Maybe that will deter him from doing anything.

Of course, Rice bears no responsibility in losing his job because of what he did, it is all the media's fault.

At least according to his idiot wife.

Works for me.

I miss spoke, my apologies. He will not be a contestant on DWTS, he is performing. He is also performing on SNL. Its to promote his new album, which comes out this month. Doesn't matter, the fact is, the man is still making money, he is still performing. His lifestyle has not changed. Rice's will.

We are assuming this is a pattern with Rice. It may be more of a pattern with her. And it could be a pattern for them as a couple. If she was attacking him, maybe its something she has done before. OTOH, maybe he has hit her before. And maybe this was the first time for any of it. (doubtful that it will be the last unless they both get some help, but we'll see). Spousal abuse is a horrible thing. But it isn't always the wife who is being abused.

I am sure there are many reasons the Ravens chose to let him go. I really wasn't talking about their choice. Its the public calling for him to be fired when the public may not do the same when it comes to someone that isn't seen as famous. Several people have mentioned CEOs being fired for various reasons. But, I know there are many people who work in many high powered positions that are less than morally stellar. They have their jobs.

I am not so sure that the fact that nothing is no longer private is a reason for someone to lose their job. Its the reason we all know about it sure, but there has to be a point in which we decide that we no longer need this much information about someone.

I would never support this man or defend what he did. Nor do I in anyway support anything about Chris Brown. I do find it a double standard that one loses his job and his way to make a living and the other is still doing what he was doing before anything became public. Its like we as a society (again, not the Ravens or the NFL) expect a certain kind of behavior from someone in the music business like Chris Brown, but yet a different kind of behavior from someone that is an athlete because he might be someone's "hero".

Sorry, but the cynic in me says she married him because of the $$$$$.
Suspension, possibly indefinite from football? She may drop him like a hot potato now.

I hadn't heard that Chris Brown would be performing on DWTS again. That's disappointing. I've heard tales that the pros show disdain for him. I dont' know why they would book him to perform.

I feel sorry for their child. She lives in a home where both mom and dad seem at ease with hitting each other.:(
