...more specifically, school newspapers.

I had a meeting today with 6 other people and an English teacher. We share the common goal of launching our first school newspaper. In the history of the school, there has never been one so we have to lay all the groundwork as well as actually produce it.

So, what I'm making a thread to discuss is about your school's newspapers. How does it run? What are your sections? What do you like/dislike about it? What do you wish you saw more of? If you're involved, what type of fundraising do you do? How do you raise awareness/recruit? These questions are just starters. Please discuss anything in regard to your school's newspaper, or lack there of as the case may be.

I was i newspaper club, but i hated the teacher . lol. it is kind of stressfull. lol. theres different sections, like what movies, and seasons, and games, and sports, and much much more. we have 4 newspapers all year long. 1 for each semester.

mhmh, I am not in it though. I wonder what my school would be like if we had a newspaper, *thinks about it* doesn't care, I'm not sure if I would even read it..

i know no one reads ours! they rip it up, throw it out, or something worse. idont wanna know lol.

our school paper publishes complete opinion pieces as factual writings not editorials, and the average high school student reads it and assumes it fact.

Well, last year our first edition came out in september. We were just figuring out the software, so the first edition was a bust. The Second Edition came out in October, and our class voted to change the name of the paper from the "Spear & Shield" to the "Spartan Mind Exposed". We didn't do much fund raising, except asking local businesses to contribute ads, and or small donations, we sold Krispy Kreme Dough nuts at one time. That got us about 1,000 dollars. Then we needed new cameras.

our sections were [sports, school life,student literary pieces - poems, writings, raps, haiku's, whatever - we had what was going on around our school/community, then we had stuff like music reviews, movies coming out, cds releasing, and then an entertainment section, with puzzles, crosswords. etc.]

There was a journalism class, so we really didn't have to recruit, although there were some that didn't take their job seriously, purposely messing up articles stuff like that, then the true writers came out. We assigned certain people certain jobs, like i'd take pictures one day, my friend would take them another...

Yes, you've helped a lot. Unfortunatly, we cannot do ads so the money issue is still there for us. Not to mention, this years journalism class has all of 7 people in it. It's my guess that maybe 3 serious writers will come out of it. But yes, as I've said, you helped a great deal - thanks!
