Newsflash! Your dog doesn't have to go EVERYWHERE with you!

I wish more places were dog friendly. I only take my dog into petsmart or other allowed places.. But I would love to take him other places. I'm a single college student and he is my "child" at this point in my life.

I can understand why people wouldn't want them in a grocery store, that seems kinda silly, but I think blowing dog whistles when you decide a dog shouldn't be there is totally out of line. You don't know that they aren't a service dog - even a chihuahua. There are many different services dogs can perform.

If your allergies are so bad that you cannot breathe you should be on a prescription medication. Don't presume what allergies I do or don't have. I don't even own a dog, so I don't want your self righteous rant about your allergies flaring up because I bring my pets everywhere. Because I don't. But If I were in a store, and bitten by a dog that YOU provoked, i'd take you to court over it so fast your nose would run.

And unless the animal is jacketed, I will presume that the owner is an entitled dog snob who has littel respect for others than to take a dog into a store clearly marked no dogs allowed even if mgmt is okay with their favorite customer doing it.

You being bit--would be the fault of the owner. Not someone with an item that isn't labeled as against the rules to bring in a store.

Have fun with that lawsuit though.

If the establishment allows it or the dog is outside, I have no problem with people bringing their dogs with them. That is assuming that the dog is well mannered and the owners pick up after it.

But I have to say, I have a hard time imagining that dogs are allowed in grocery stores.

Therein lies the problem. Everyone that takes their dog into stores believes their dog is well mannered. Unfortunately, because they believe it doesn't necessarily make it true. I think it is a disgusting habit that needs to stop but it certainly doesn't surprise me in today's society. We seem to live in a time where people feel they can do whatever makes them happy with little regard to anyone around them.

You should live in Boulder, CO.

First town in the country to ban owning dogs, humans are their guardians.

Dogs are everywhere, (I actually love it) although not in food establishments such as grocery stores. That is pretty strictly enforced. Dog lovers pretty much self regulate that part as the don't want to lose the broad privileges they have for their dogs in other places.

You go to a restaurant and their outdoor patios usually have dog bowls on the ground for fido.

Home Depot and Lowes have dog biscuits at the check out counter.

McDonalds has dog treats at the drive up window.

The upscale mall allows dogs.

At kids sporting events, lots and lots of dogs.

While there are leash laws in town, many of the mountain trails are leash or voice control.

Dogs, large and small, are just part of life here There aren't very many places you don't see or can't take dogs.

Downtown Denver just passed an ordinance in the past couple of years too that allows dogs on restaurant patios.

But, unfortunately, as progressive as the city and surrounding towns are about allowing dogs in places, they are equally backwards on very strict breed bans.

FWIW - my dogs rarely go anywhere. I cannot walk the trails because they are too protective of me and some people's definition of voice control is laughable. Also, taking a 100lb corded dog somewhere is not conducive to making forward progress as people constantly stop you and ask if I spent all day with the curling iron doing their cords :lmao:

I get that which is why I added that line.

If a dog is allowed in an establisment or is outside, I don't pay much attention. If they are misbehaving, I'll ignore them just like an unruly child.

I confess, when my dog was a puppy I'd put him a baby sling and take him into stores with me, not in the food carts though. But now that I've been a dog owner for a while, I see it really isn't the right thing to do. I WISH I could take him on a leash into stores, but I don't. That said, I don't think it would bother me to see a well-behaved dog in a grocery store. I've seen/smelled some really dirty people in stores who shouldn't be around public food!

my husband works at a car dealership and he said you'd be amazed how many people bring their dogs with them. He's always telling me what type of dogs he sees each week sitting in the waiting area. I do find it strange.

Hey Binny, drive up north to our 40 square miles surrounded by reality :lmao:

LOL I was just reading your last post. Ive been spending a lot of time lately in your neck of the woods and youre exactly right. I was up for the great big sea concerts last month with a bunch of people from all of the country. They commented on it too, dogs everywhere!

Then we saw Bruiser on Pearl St and laughed hysterically! Someone said "See? Even the people dress like dogs!" :lmao:

For those who are not fortunate enough to visit Boulder here is a picture of "Bruiser" One of the many acts on Pearl St.

If I see you with a dog whistle in stores upsetting animals because YOU have decided they do not need to be there, I will call the police and management. I do NOT want you upsetting dogs in confined spaces. What if the dog is aggressive? (service dogs are not aggressive, but your messing with them can end up hurting their handler)

If you see something you do not like, call management.

Because engaging and provoking stranger dogs is always an awesome idea! :thumbsup2

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Yesterday, someone brough there dog in the resturant with them. This lady said they dog was afraid to be in the car alone

I know 3 people on my life that are deathly afraid of dogs, all stemming from incidents of being attacked as children.

Why should they have to go through the anxiety and fear of being exposed to your animal in a restaurant? In a grocery store? :confused3 These are places where animals do not belong.

Service animals are few and far between, I know that they don't have a choice in that situation.

But come on, leave the dog at home when you go grocery shopping! Think about others around you, a little common courtesy would be nice.

I am so tired of the "dog is my child/family" thing, really???? Really, a dog is the same as a human to you? :confused3

I don't like this trend either. I am not a pet person.

My siblings have dogs and cats and my best friend has a small dog who I like and buy presents for but I don't want one for myself (plus DH and DD have allergies and asthma).

I don't care what other countries allow and don't see how it is pertinent in the US.

I think part of the problem is the fact that shopping has become less of get in/buy/get out then a day long social activity. So of course you want to bring your animal with you while you are social.

If I saw a dog in a grocery store that wasn't an assist dog I would report it to management since it is illegal.

To me, taking an animal with you shopping ranks with taking a child. Neither really wants to be there, it is boring and they don't like to be restrained.

I love dogs. I have one now. I was raised with them and there has rarely been a time in my life that I didn't have at least one. But I do recognize that they are DOGS, not humans. I don't believe that they belong everywhere a human goes. I completely recognize that there are people who don't like them, are allergic to them, etc. I respect that and would never take my dog anywhere that isn't dog-friendly. If guests come in my home and they aren't comfortable with dogs, I lock my dog up. It just seems courteous to me to try to make other people comfortable rather than accommodate my pet. She is a dog. She learns the boundaries that I set and seems fairly happy with her lot in life. ;)

Our malls allowed pets for a while, but they recently changed their policies and banned them. I'm really glad they did. I have no issue with service dogs at all, but I can't understand why anyone would bring their non-service dog to the mall. :confused3 And the grocery store? Ewwwwww!!!!

That is hysterical. I haven't been up to Pearl Street for awhile. I am going to have to bring our Komondor up to visit Bruiser.

Completely off topic (and my apologies to everybody else), but Binny - if you are spending lots of time up here, cheer starts on May 17 - :goodvibes

I just dont think they would enjoy shopping at the mall. :confused3

Charley would. He loves going anywhere with us. Honestly. He's just happy to be with us, all the time. :cloud9:
