Newsflash! Your dog doesn't have to go EVERYWHERE with you!

Small humans can go to a place that sells food or has a sign that forbids dogs.

So no, you cannot substitute small human.

Again I did not say the grocery store, I said some of the other places. My place for one I would rather you leave the kids but feel free to bring the dogs. I have never had an issue with an animal but I have had isssue with children crawling all over dangerous chemicals unsupervised, or riding around on their heelies running into people or along the rims of some metal pieces from where they could fall and impale themselves. Again unsupervised. :confused3

I will not even get into the "clean up" we have to do after they get sick in the isles or the condition that our bathrooms are left in.

One of the biggest places that children should not be ( but parents disagree) community hot tubs.

Yes! I totally agree with you!!!!
I actually feel very badly for people that treat their dogs/cats like kids....
must be sad to only have that in your life.

Well aren't you a little ray of sunshine.

I'm 20 and finishing up college.. I think treating my dog like my child is a whole lot better than having a baby right now! If I did, I am sure I would get crap for that too.

Don't pity me.. I have a wonderful life and my dog is an absolute joy to myself and my parents who call him the "grandchild."

Yeah, your dog is sooo cute that if I saw him in the store I would ask you if it were for sale, and if you were to say no, I would just kiss on him anyway. It wouldn't bother me to see him in a cart ;)

We've had our first sighting of a big, non-service dog in the grocery store. DH told me the dog was tied to a pole in the pharmacy. I was in one area of the store when I heard the dog barking in another. :scared1:

Um, of course I can shop and eat without my dog. It was nice on the weekends when going for a stroll to bring her along. If we were going to be be sitting outside eating on a nice day, why leave her at home alone? If we wanted to do a couple of errands on our way to or from Central Park, and the businesses were fine with her being there, why does anyone else get to decide that we should not and need therapy because of it.

She is welcomed at the restaurants, stores and bank we bring her to. They have water bowls out and treats at the counters. It's a little presumptuous and just plain nasty to say someone needs therapy because you don't agree with something someone does. Just because you may think the dogs don't belong somewhere, does not at all make it so. If the businesses didn't think the dogs should be there, they wouldn't have things available for the dogs. It is merely your opinion, but again, as long as the business owners and management allow it, and even encourage it I don't see why anyone else should have an issue with it.

It is only your opinion that they don't belong somewhere, but they are allowed. If the store, restaurant or bank did not want the dog there, we wouldn't have brought her there. It's not up to an individual to decide what another person may or may not do, thankfully.

My dh is in Afghanistan for the next year, I will be sure to write him and let him know that you think he needs therapy because he brought his dog to the bank.

Perhaps my post wasn't clear. Where I live dogs are not allowed in the bank, restaurants, the mall, Kmart etc. So it is not just my opinion that they don't belong there. They are not allowed. Yet I always see someone with their pet in the store. They sneak them past the guard at the door. Yes- I have reported people when I have seen it because their animal is not allowed in the store. Sorry- but if you are that hung up (a general you) on your pet that you simply cannot bear to be apart from them while you buy underwear even when they are not allowed to be in the store then yes- I think you (a general you) has issues. Sorry but I do. For you inparticular the stores are okay with you bringing the dog. From what I have seen that is not the case. If I know a store welcomes pets- and offering them treats and water would clue me in- then I can make a choice if I want to go there knowing there could be animals there. If I know I am going to a store that does not allow them (the supermarket for example) then I do not want them in there. I think that is reasonable.

BTW- I'm sorry your DH is going to be gone for a year. That must be very tough to be separated for so long. I hope his tour goes quickly and he arrives home safe and sound.

Thank you for proving my point about SOME people.

Please don't feel sorry for me. You don't even know me and I don't need your condescending "pity." I have plenty of love in my life from good people.

You know, I was trying to be nice. :confused3 I'm glad that you have people in your life that love you.

I'm sorry if you think animals are better than me, obviously you know so much about me.

You are the one that posted that you feel animals are better than people. But I guess that means just the people that you judge are not better than animals.;)

See ya, I don't need your condescending attitude either, you are a real trip! :hippie:

This thread seems to be going down the same path as the working mom vs. stay-home mom threads, helicopter vs. non-helicopter parents, Pepsi vs. Coke, innies vs. outies... whatever.

People who don't love dogs, you will never understand those that do. It's really not a reason to jump all over each other.

Sorry, off topic. My two cents... I love dogs, but no, for health reasons they should not be hanging out in shopping carts at the grocery store.

THANK YOU I could not agree more! I have a co worker that will turn down invitations, if she can't bring her dogs, even dinner parties! Get this, I work in a pediatric practice and a mom brought in the DOG. Not only to the waiting room, but down the hall to the exam room! No, not a service dog, a new puppy she was showing off! I said something to her, only to be over ruled by one of the docs that wanted to see the pup! DISGUSTING!

i used to be bothered by this. I have decided not to let it bother me (or my allergies, or my children's allergies, etc), and am going to stop at a pet store tomorrow and get a good dog whistle. That way, if i see an dog which is almost certainly not a helper animal (no, i am not going to buy that your teacup chihuahua is "helping" guide you around the store), i can simply pull out the dog whistle and see if i can whistle a jaunty little tune on it.

wtg!

Heelies are not children and are banned in many places.

Kids crawling over dangerous chemicals? How would a dog be better suited for that?

As for the hot tubs--if it isn't banned by the establishment--again, why do you care?

All the rest of us are talking about is places where a dog is not allowed to be.

Arguing why you think children should be banned is without merit.

I think it is more of an issue as to where dogs are not allowed to be and folks bringing them anyway.

At least that is how I'm reading it.

hrm not in the grocery store... But I'm ok with small dogs in other shops and pretty much everywhere else as long as....

- They don't bark, bite, are in some sort of carrier (not the shopping carriage), are well groomed and well mannered are not allowed to go on the floor.

I've seen plenty of little dogs in major department stores and well they behave better then most children.

So until I see clean non smelly/dirty (and don't get me wrong I'm not saying all children are like this but I've seen my share) little kids running around touching everything throwing tantrums and moms running yelling behind them. I guess its just not that big of a thing to me..

I used to work in a pediatric office too and we had this happen! However the doc told the Mom he would NOT allow the dog in the exam room and she had to take him to the car. :thumbsup2

If a store owner or the health dept has no problem with a dog being in a store- neither do I. I like dogs- I really do. We have a 12 year old 80 pound Weimaraner who sleeps on our bed every night. Would she go everywhere with me if I offered it to her- yes she would because as a dog, she wants to please me. It doesn't mean she really enjoys it more than she would staying home and laying on the couch.

Children are people (even if they are dirty, loud and misbehave) don't compare them to an animal.

See, if you try to make things personal with a total stranger, don't be surprised when they don't take it so well. Please don't pretend you were trying to be nice. You took a general statement I made, which was not even directed at you and made a major assumption based upon it. You don't understand why I would say that animals are better than some humans? Turn on the news once in a while! I happen to think that all life is important, not just human life. I guess I'm just more spiritually evolved.

Yeah, peace out!:hippie:

I LOVE dogs.. we'll be getting two brand new puppies in 6 wks they were just born on Sat  I'm still not taking them shopping with me.. I will how ever be taking the kids ;)

I am sooo glad for this thread. A close relative has recently acquired a dog. He has taken to bringing the dog everywhere he can including my house. I like the pet I really do but if I wanted one at my house, I would get one. Unfortunately I have a hard time sticking up for myself. To me a dog is a pet, it's not his child (he keeps calling the pet his son). Anyway, when our new house is done, my husband will be telling him that his PET his not welcome. If he chooses to not visit then oh well. Obviously I'm on the side of pets should not be brought everywhere. I don't think it's cute to see your dog in the shopping cart, or at my kids school. They are not people.

No, the dog is his son, just like my dog is my son. Not everyone wants kids. Nothing wrong with that.

I do agree with you that he shouldn't be bringing the dog to your house without your permission. That is rude.

While it is a cute thing to say and I can appreciate the affection for the animal...legally, it is not your son no matter how many times you insist that it is. It is a domesticated pet.

I don't find anything wrong with it personally.

But do find it strange when folks use their doggie as a substitute for a child. My opinion--but it is weird to dress out your doggie and treat it like a baby and I cannot believe how much that industry makes.

I have cats--love them to pieces, but my cat would not have it if I insisted on putting on a cute outfit. And yes--i do baby talk them. But I also realize they are not my daughters and son--even when I did not have children.

I have a friend who will get her dogs a baby sitter when she needs to go out ANYWHERE.. including food shopping thankfully she doesn't take them with her because they pee at the site of any human.. she also takes them to her parents when she goes to work

I'm not going to try to be nice to you this time, promise ;)

But I do want to be nice to your pet, so for people that feel this way about your pet, please make sure to have a pet trust done for your pet.

The statistics on how many pets are euthanized when their owners die are very sad. The majority of EP attorneys do pet trusts and that way you can rest assured that your dog will be taken care of and not end up in the humane society.

And don't think that just asking a friend to do it will be sufficient, many times that works for awhile but then issues like cost, moving, a new job, a child, etc come into play and your pet still ends up being abadoned.
