News Round Up 2020

From a purely selfish perspective, I’m glad. I don’t want to go again until “this” is over due to lack of masks. Now I won’t be tempted in November if my son wants to go. I hope the employees are given other work though. It’s an amazing park, and I love it. I am surprised though, because attendance there has been through the roof. I wonder if they think it will drop off with the weather. I bet APs would have gone even with cold weather just to be at a park without a mask.

In case people were wonder, I was looking at some of the business takes on Disney and the layoffs, etc.

Saw this article from yahoo Finance and the "outlook" section sort of shows their view:
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/mass-furloughs-imply-disneys-kingdom-154412242.html
"It will be a while before normalcy returns to Disney's Parks kingdom, and the new normal may look drastically different than the one we had pre-pandemic. COVID-19 has shown that no matter how big and seemingly indestructible a company might seem, life has a way to make even the strongest companies tumble. Only one thing is certain: regardless of the outcome – Disney will not be the same company it was before COVID-19. Its kingdom was perfectly exposed to the pandemic and the once unbeatable entertainment giant is now more vulnerable than ever. "

BTW - the whole market is down today because of other news, but DIS is actually down less than the broader market (the S&P is currently down 0.63% and DIS is down 0.5%

It didn't really hit me until today when they mentioned that bag checks at DL now include the new scanners. Those scanners were put in place at DS in the spring.

Is it new that guests must go through a scanner before entering DS? I don't remember this being part of the process to enter DS when we visited in Sep 2019. Is it new with the openings in May or were these changes made before then?

I was just at Disney Springs a week and a half ago, parked at the Lime Garage, there were no security screenings. There was a temperature screening, but no security.

Was the article speaking of Downtown Disney in Cali? Or that these new scanners have been put in place at the parks? Because as far as I know, there is no security screening at Disney Springs.

Edited to add: just read the article and it says Downtown Disney in California. So that’s where they’re scanning, not Springs in Florida.

Disney springs did test these scanners prior to them being installed at any of the Disney parks.

James Bond delayed until April making Soul the next big release on November 20th. Not great news for theaters.

https://deadline.com/2020/10/no-time-to-die-delayed-to-easter-2021-1234590519/

Well, Soul is likely moving to Disney+ (premiere) IF it stays with that date. I dont think Disney would risk having a year with 2 Pixar theatrical releases and combined not even gross 1B at the box office.

Also AMC’s credit rating was just dropped today - they were given 6 months to turn things around significantly or run out of money. So the movie going experience is likely going to change in a big way in 2021, even more than it already has, and that’s if they even survive

We were going to go see the new Bond in the theatres. Bummer.

The Disney+ rumors for Soul do make sense. I think it’s a much stronger candidate to test than Mulan was. But theaters need movies to survive, right now they’re counting on the last 3 major films still holding onto this year. If Soul goes, all hope goes onto Dune (which won’t drive attendance) and Wonder Woman. Theaters will continue to struggle.

I think Dune and WW84 (again) will be moved within the next couple of weeks. I think there’s a small chance those movies make their dates, unfortunately. I think because of when Soul is coming out, it would do fairly well on premiere compared to Mulan. Thanksgiving weekend, presumably family’s will still gather for the holiday and without the madness of Black Friday, could be a perfect time to sit down and watch a movie together. That would be the hope, I assume. But you never know. Nothing is official until it is. Right now these movies are set to make theatrical debuts in Nov/Dec.

The Bond music video was just released yesterday, which seems very weird to drop that without having the movie hit the theaters soon, let alone delay the movie the very next day. Strange, strange marketing

I don’t think Dune stands a chance with the current situation, even if I think it’ll be great. And I don’t see DC risking Wonder Women if Disney doesn’t show the market is still there. Tenet’s failure really hurt.

So Disneyland Resort, with no opening date for the parks, gets new scanners but we still don’t have them at MK and the main Epcot entrance? They should have been installed before the parks reopened.

Once you enter security you have access to dt disney, dlr and dca, it's one giant bubble. And dtd seems to always be busy because they are always tweeting about parking and access limits due to crowds.

Yes it would and will be nice for this to happen at wdw but it makes sense to have them here. Especially if they want to test them in a place that actually needs them vs ds. With only dtd open there's still concern but no worry that something gets into the parks if it malfunctions or something.
