News Round Up 2020

Hard Rock Park died for a multitude of reasons, the details surrounding it make for a fascinating read. It was doomed before it opened, the downturn just made it quick. It seems American Dream might be facing that same fate, after only 5 months of operation. Hard Rock at least got 2 “years” technically.
Most of these other Central Florida non Disney parks aren’t in that bad of shape. SeaWorld/ Busch was in great shape prior to the shutdown, and their attendance isn’t all that bad now. Their debt levels are manageable, the liens get them bad headlines, but it’s not unusual. And even if they do go under, those are the types of parks that would be purchased by somebody else. Legoland’s parent company isn’t doing all that great overall, but things were improving and they continue to expand now that they are owned by the “LEGO” family. They have significant financial backing, so they can survive but it certainly isn’t guaranteed. Fun Spot is supposedly making a profit again. Holyland seems like it’s the one to be most concerned about in the area, they were barely holding on before the virus.

The parks to be most concerned about are the ones run by families and small companies. Multiple parks around the country have stated that they can survive a dead year, but if next year flops, they’ll have to close. Parks have been steadily closing for the past few years, the US actually has the fewest number of operating “amusement parks” now than in the past 120 years, although the remaining parks have been steadily growing in other metrics. This situation will absolutely kill a few more parks.
The only thing I will add is it will be sad to see if parks do close up. I realize part of it will have to do with the shutdown but the other part is people for some reason just don't go to amusement parks as much as they used. I wish more people would support their local park. Its always sad to hear many say they live close to a park and never go. Instead just go to Disney.

I will say we're the people you're mentioning but for us, we're just not big 'amusement park' fans. We live within an hour of Canada's Wonderland which is a big amusement park but the lines are long, food expensive and for what we pay for a day, we'd prefer to do other things.

The big difference I see between an amusement park and Disney is that Disney is an 'experience'. There is a lot for us to do there as well as the rides. Most of our local amusement park is thrill rides so if that isn't your thing, it's not much of a draw even though it's a great amusement park!

What is 'Everglazed Donuts'? I tried to google it but couldn't find a link to the company, just a dozen links to announcements that it's coming to Disney Springs. Does anyone have a link to the actual Everglazed Donuts site?

no info on it really, seems like it will be unique to Disney Springs

I do feel like the font they use reminds me of Dunkin' Donuts but not sure if that is just a coincidence

We live about 2 hours away from Canada's Wonderland and have never been yet we drive down to Disney multiple times per year. We really don't have any interest in going to just an amusement park but love the Disney experience with all it has to offer.

Depends on the type of parks you have close to and IF you can support them now.

My "local" (4 hours away) parks are Carowinds and King's Dominion and neither have opened (or have plans to probably due to state regulations). Both are geared towards older teenagers/young adults and while they have water park and kiddie rides, they just aren't worth the cost to go there with a young family. And if I am going to drive 4 hours . .may as well drive halfway to Disney World. :). To me, they are "soulless" amusement parks that have lost all of their original charm and theme (that they definitely had at first) ... in favor of just shoe-horning in a newer, bigger, steel coaster every few years. So there isn't much there for little kids (for the cost).

My parents live near "Little Amerricka" in Wisconsin (near Madison) which we've gone to (and hope to this summer). It has saved/salvaged old-time rides into a small little park perfect for little kids. (under 10). They've opened back up and I hope to go there this summer. As a small, local park that is 100% outside, it doesn't need to worry about masks and social distancing and enhanced cleaning (I wouldn't be concerned going there). Also can't beat the price.

The park I wish was open was Tweetsie Railroad near Boone, NC. A theme park for sure. But it can't open either (I think) under state guidelines, and probably has lost most of its operating year because it is only open during the summer mainly. It does have fall/winter events, but it isn't open every day. A bit of a far jaunt, but kid friendly. I'd go there this summer instead of Disney simply because less cost in getting there and going there to "try out" how going to a theme park during this virus will be.

That's the problem with this virus -- I'd love to support local things -- but a lot are still not ALLOWED to be open yet.

This is the problem with the death of the small time parks. All that have survived are the regional parks. I mean I love the Cedar Fair parks, but I try to never go on a weekend or eat at one.

Local parks just can't keep up with the arms race and people nowadays constantly want new new new. I think a ton of parks (Rock n Roll included) also waste a lot of money doing poor theming. Unless you are going to compete with Universal or Lego on theming, spend the money on rides and staffing. This is where Cedar Fair knows their business well.

The thing here is that most people on this board, and in general, go to Disney because they like Disney or Disney Parks specifically. Most people don’t seek out Disney Parks to scratch that amusement park itch, but rather because they enjoy Disney IP or the Disney Parks experience.

I’ve mentioned it before, but I have little to no interest in going to other amusement parks, because they don’t interest me - not even because I think they’re poor quality, but it’s a hobby I don’t care for. Disney hits a different niche for me, so I go to their parks, but for the most part I’d rather spend a free day or extended trip doing anything else beyond visiting an amusement park.

Yep same. I haven't been to ValleyFair (about 30 min away) in well over a decade. But WDW many times a year.

However we hit the MN State Fair every year (closed this year) simply for the food and ambiance-might walk the midway at night but no rides.

Partly why we like EPCOT and the Festivals there.

Us too... I think the last time I went to VF (we're in the Stillwater area) was before I ever went to Disney long long ago and we do the State Fair more for the food than the rides - I think Mickey spoiled every other amusement park as, for us, none are comparable.

Ordered one Star Wars Starbucks mug on May 4th. Was charged and received one last week. Now it appears on June 30th I was charged again and received a second one today. So strange.

Two or three times I’ve received the same order twice, from different warehouses, and was charged once. I called /emailed and they took note each time but said to donate the items. They should refund if you call them.
