News Round Up 2016

Josh over at easywdw.com has a two-part park visit report for MK. The overall theme seems to be that standby waits are frankly getting a little absurd.

This stood out to me:

If you were to wait in line in the afternoon for Mine Train, Peter Pan’s Flight, and Space Mountain, you’d wait a total of six hours. It’s not easy to defend that.

Just from the pictures it's obvious the park is packed, and both Len and Josh (and CMs too) have admitted the Spring Break crowds caught them by surprise this year. Even so, if the issue is that Spring Break is unusually spread this year, that should mean a longer level of higher than average crowds, not a longer level of close to peak crowds. The same number of people are being spread across a longer span, after all.

So, how much of this is higher gates[1], how much is reduced staffing[2], and how much is three other parks not pulling their weight[3]?

[1] Thanks Obama.
[2] Thanks China.
[3] Thanks George[4].

[4] Yes, I know.

What I come back to is that Disney didn't pick three as the number of FP+ rides by accident. For some reason they believe that if people get three rides during the day they will be happy.

And if people are prepared to stand in line for 2 hours to ride something... maybe 3 really is the magic.

Which is a horrible thought.

I've heard that if you get 10 experiences during the day that includes rides, shows, meet and greets, etc. if you get that magic 10 a day your vacation is a success.

Of course reasonably you'd pick the 3 attractions that have the waits, and have plenty of walk on experiences at Mermaid, Haunted Mansion, Teacups, etc.

That assumes that there are rides you are interested in that don't have waits. Lately it seems even stuff like Mansion which traditionally has a fast moving queue has wait times.

We're still in Spring Break season so I doubt there are many walk ons right now.

That's because mansion has fastpass. Moving omnimovers like that shouldn't have FP.

I see people all over so against it. I wonder if people actually SAW the 21 & 22 Jump Street movies? They very cleverly made fun of the type of movies they were and the fact that they were 21 Jump Street movies. Especially 22 Jump Street, which spent much of it's run time making fun of itself for being a sequel while at the same time doing some of the things it was making fun of. Then at the end made fun of the unending sequels that could come from a successful movie - including parodying cast members being replaced and the like.

Here's a link to a bunch of the posters: http://collider.com/22-jump-street-sequel-posters/

So I think the idea behind the MIB/Jump Street sequel is to play with the ridiculousness of the concept even further.

Turning it back to Disney - Lord & Miller - the two guys that did these two movies and also the quite brilliant Lego movie - are on board to direct the Han Solo Star Wars movie. I imagine they will give it a more serious tone than the Jump Street movies, but I am hoping there will be a lot more "fun" to it than we get out of most of the Star Wars movies.

I can see your point. From that point of view, it might be hilarious. I actually liked Jump Street and MIB. They are both very satirical. Lego had too much singing though. Now, the Lego cartoons, on the other hand, are awesomely hilarious and satirical.

I said it before when Good Dinosaur was being released, and I wasn't necessarily wrong. In my opinion, nowadays it just feels like Pixar tries too hard to make you feel emotional because that's what's been working for them for over 15-20 years. I totally get it: You have to find the heart of the story. But Good Dinosaur proved me that sometimes it just doesn't feel as authentic anymore... Hope to be proven wrong with this one, though.

Right now I'm looking forward to Coco more than to Dory, but it still looks like it could be a good time.

I don't think authenticity was The Good Dinosaur's problem. It was so remarkably boring. I actually fell asleep in the theater more than once.
Inside Out had plenty of pathos, but was a great film.
I expect Finding Dory to be excellent.
