News Round Up 2016

Well we're really delving far to far into the political here so let me try to answer you question and then tie this all back to Disney.

I think this country is full of companies who pay inadequate wages. Walmart's minimum is about the same as Disney's for example. So no it's not just Disney nor is it just an Orlando problem.

However, Disney is a company that has not only the revenue, but the profit margin which would allow it to pay better wages should it wish to. They do not do so purely to satisfy shareholders (and keep their own stock portfolios buoyant). Any other excuses they give are just that, excuses. They are a company and their sole focus is making money, but they are only too happy to blow pixie dust BS at people and talk about loyalty and magic as though those are substitutes for treating your employees well.

I think they should be called out on that when they do it (along with all the other companies who employ the same slimy practices).

And yes I've been known to call out my own company when they start running the "loyalty" line while simultaneously cutting employees too.

Well said.

I do wonder what they should pay $_____/hr

Also have heard US housecleaned a bit last month to, and I think they pay about the same as well-with plenty of reserves available I think.

I think CP has had a bigger neg impact on permanent than in the past-but am not positive on that.

SeaWorld has a similar minimum so I imagine Universal does too. They all pay as little as they can get away with.

The CP (which I think is down around $8 an hour?) and capping people's hours at 30 per week so they don't have to pay benefits are favorite methods for keeping payroll costs down.

I was wondering about that thanks.

Have heard CP gets no OT pay even if 60 hours, and no benefits.

CPs are eligible for overtime, whether or not they are able to schedule themselves for that is a whole other thing. This can be over 40 hours in a week, or double-back time, and probably some other way.
As far as benefits, there are options for seasonal cast. I never looked too hard at mine as a PI, but it was offered. It's not the best, but they do offer housing, (free) transportation, and the main entrances passes/guest passes/discounts.

Well that's better. Though when I talk about benefits I mean things like Medical Insurance, 401K programs...

I don't think anything for insurance was offered, but there is onsite clinics (not the best, but its something) and there is some sort of 401k or savings program, but again I never read into it. Since I didn't work in the parks, I didn't really have access to most of the backstage stuff so I don't fully know how the whole thing works.

It must have been something like that then, he said he was working 60 hours over XMAS and no OT, even mentioned Holidays was not OT when otherwise it would have been, at least I thought he said that.

Parks were checked daily online for blackouts he said.

Geez, back to regular news please.

Just popped over to the other board and read this, now I feel bad.

I have been suffering and struggling for over five years now and this internship would have changed my life drastically. Getting into the Disney College Program meant so much more to me than getting to go to Disney Land for six months and goof off and make amazing memories with friends. This experience was going to change my life in a way that I've been needing for so long and now I've been rejected. This feels terrible. I've been crying for three hours straight. I haven't gotten the rejection email yet, but my status says "No longer in consideration." If I was accepted, why would they tell me I was no longer in consideration? I don't understand where I went wrong. I applied for so many different roles even custodian although cleaning up after people is definitely not what I would have wanted to be doing down there. But I was willing to take that chance just tot be there and have that experience. If it wouldn't break my dad's heart, I'd go into my twelve foot pool and drown myself right now (I can't swim). I'm completely devastated.

Please just give me some kind words or some encouragement or something. Any other people who were rejected have some consoling words? I really could use it. Anyone who was rejected then accepted if they applied again?

People who got accepted, please recognize and understand that there are thousands of people all over the world like myself who really NEEDed this opportunity and you are so incredibly blessed to have received it. I'm sure I'm not the only one who turned to the DCP to fix some bad circumstances and got rejected. So go there and live it up :) Don't ever forget how fortunate you are to be there.

This will be my last post on this. But FL law requires OT for a weekly and daily limit.
Disney offers OT (time and a half) for 40+ in a week, 8+ in a day, or the 6th day of work. I believe double back (less than 8 hours between shifts) is also time and a half.
Double time is offered for 60+ a week, 14+ a day, and the 7th day worked (scheduled, if volunteered it's time and a half).
They also don't offer holiday pay - working Christmas is the same rate as a random Thursday in June

The Disney week is Saturday-Sunday with pay on Thursday. It's possible he worked 60 hours, but not in a single pay period.

When CMs are force extended, it can throw them into OT as well. I don't know the reasoning for sure, but it makes sense to me that regular hours are cut for scheduling so that when hours are extended same day, there are fewer CMs put into OT. Pure speculation, but it makes sense to me.

Thanks that must be what they were doing.

Does any other park have a proper welcome show now?

It's cute and I like it (though sometimes it's better to just push on to the rides) but I can see it being an easy target for "cost cutting".

MK is the only one currently. This doesn't necessarily seem part of the cost cutting as they are going to a new rope drop thing altogether according to what was mentioned in the ABD description.

DL I thought still had the opening show too.

Rumor

Speculation based on the new florida ABD trip is the Welcome show at the Magic Kingdom will be ending...

no, No, NO!... a hundred times NO!

I'm ok with the other three parks opening without a welcome show, but this is the Magic Kingdom! It's such a fun way to start the day and the kids are always so excited to see all the characters welcoming into the park. Okay, so maybe I like it too.

Saving a couple hundred bucks and taking away a big magic moment is so shortsighted and sad. I hope it doesn't happen.

I agree. I'd rather see them cut a dozen other things before the welcome show. It's really the only park left that tells a real story going in, and the opening show is a huge part of it.

I'd like to point this out as pure rumor/speculation no official word.

rope drop could be the same thing its just named something different in different departments

oh and Cps arent regular employees and are actually contracted so disney can get away with things like no insurance and hours. According to what I have heard, Cpers are making the same wages that part timers are making these days. One of the issues with the one park one world concept with accounting. They have to be paid california minimum wage in cali, so they get the same wages in florida. One of the reasons meg decided to take time for her family. She made that deal

CPs are seasonal employees - not contractors. Two different classifications that result in different benefits (contractors do not get the Disney perks of free entry and discounts for example). It is also possible to be seasonal outside the DCP, and all of those individuals are still considered regular employees
