News Round Up 2016

Interesting post from rohde on instagram. This photo is from someone on wdwmagic. One would assume he is talking about RoL but it could also be about Pandora, or guardians, or something else. One source believes it could be about guardians.

That last sentence or two really makes me say RoL over Guardians. Although it's controversial, Guardian's is still early enough (Based on what I've seen) that if Disney really wanted to, they could reverse themselves.

He's making it sound like this is an issue that's been going on for a while, and yet the executives just keep saying they have to keep going with it.

You guys need to actually go and read Joe Rohde's Instagram account. He posted this as one in a "Series of essays for designers and directors, regarding classic failures of logic". They are actually pretty good reading, but I think that once you look at the full body, it's hard to argue that he is talking about a specific project here. When asked in that post if it applies to Rivers of Light, he writes:

He also has a good one that goes off on the concept of "For a Limited Time Only!" that just because something is limited alone does not make it worth while. As I said, a really good read.
Yes I saw that. I love reading his instagram account.

yeah, but if people aren't able to take things out of context the internet will lose 55% of it's post traffic!

Crossroads shopping center to close for Disney road enhancements

http://wdwnt.com/blog/2016/12/crossroads-shopping-center-closing-disney-road-enhancements/

that's interesting as there is a lot of stuff there ... as the article mentions, would be a boon for Disney Springs as less (cheaper) competition

Interesting. My parents live five miles north from there, off 535 (Apopa-Vineland) and that I-4 exit/on-ramp is easily the worst traffic debacle I've ever experienced in all of my years of driving - so, yeah, they definitely need to do something. The loss of the shopping center would suck, as that's the McDonald's I take my husband to every morning before going in to the parks - but, it's also pretty much been dead to me since Jungle Jim's went away (Stay Hard, animal-butt stools). If they did a designated fly-over straight into Hotel Plaza Blvd, leaving 535 mostly to be traveled by locals, that would definitely be an improvement. But Hotel Plaza Blvd. would definitely need to be widened to take the traffic. Luckily, with that wide median, there's plenty of room.

My wife was browsing the Shop Disney Parks app a few days ago and noticed that each Magic Band carries the California Proposition 65 warning that reads:

"This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, and other reproductive harm"

This warning does not exist anywhere on the My Disney Experience site when choosing a color for magic bands due to Resort Reservations or Passholder Status and it also does not exist on any Magic Band product page on Disneyworld.com

I am still waiting for further response from Disney, however all initial contact was met with utter disbelief and ignorance by any cast member I spoke to until I produced the screen captures that contained the warnings. Neither of us had ever heard or seen it either until my wife happened upon it.

Does anyone know what chemical(s) in the Magic Bands require posting of this warning? I am asking as my wife (17weeks pregnant at the time) just spent a week at WDW starting December 3rd and, as we regularly do, both of us used our Magic Bands for the duration of the trip.

I realize this isn't the best place to ask such a question, but if anyone knows the answer or can direct me to a better source, my wife and I would greatly appreciate it.

I do not know for certain but I found this article which talks about a wire that connected a keyboard to a laptop that carried the warning and a person did some digging and found that a lot of electronic devices will carry it because the circuit board could have lead or other chemicals in it and California is ridiculously strict (basically if 1 in 100,000 people that are exposed to that level for 70 straight years got cancer they have to have the label) and if you don't you can get fined heavily (one company didn't label their lunchbox which may have contained trace amounts of led and they were fined $10 million)

Also, companies tend to play it safe and put that on it if they use 3rd party parts as they may or may not have trace amounts of lead

I definitely would continue to dig just to be safe but I would think it is more of a "better to be safe in avoiding a fine so lets add the disclaimer" type thing

Side note - I assume you mean your wife is 17 weeks, not months pregnant, correct?

Correct it is weeks not months! I would generally agree that it is a better safe than sorry play. However if they do indeed meet the proposition 65 requirements, then Disney has violated the labeling requirements quite a bit by only providing that information to persons with an iOS/android device with the Shop Disney Parks app installed. I even checked my passholder Magic Band box, and none of the paperwork within it contains any reference to prop 65 either.

Pretty much everything causes cancer, birth defects, etc. in California.

Look at the back of your shampoo, things like Neutrogena soap, hand sanitizer, etc.

I'll find the photo, but even DLR has the same warning at the park gates ...

Honestly you'll find a bunch and I mean a bunch of stuff that have that warning.

We got sprinkler heads (that look like a flower and attach to your hose) at Home Depot that said it for example. Just take it that for CA just about anything could be classified as "known to cause cancer"..I'm only slightly exaggerating.

Oh I know but my wife removed all of that and purchased all new bath and cleaning products. It took us forever to find sunscreen that both contained and did not contain certain materials (ended up with some weird banana scented crap). If I could only get a hold of the specific chemical and the method of use (aka if you stuck it in your mouth as opposed to wearing the band around your wrist) I think I could make her much more comfortable. The problem is that I still haven't actually gotten Disney to aknowlege that the warning exists on the Magic Bands, let alone inform me of the offending material.

Also I got a Parks App notification for the new Rogue One bands this morning and they also contain the warning.

If it isn't obvious, this is our first...

I recall seeing that sign (I think it is as you are entering the esplanade

My initial thought that it was ironic given what Walt died of

Sorry for not saying it right away but congratulations and best of luck!
With this (and like everything) trust your gut. People have been having kids for a long time - you'll do great!

Hey there! I think the best person to ask about this would be your OB/Gyn!

That's what we hope to do, but the stupidity of prop 65 is that they warn you that there IS a chemical but not WHAT it is, so unless we can find out there is no way for our OB to give any advice. If we had seen this before the trip it would be a non issue, however we wore the bands for a week already (when we go back in February we will just use the passholder cards).

Thanks MaxRebo!

I'll try not to derail the thread anymore, but if I do manage to find out through Disney I will update. They should have whatever would amount to a MSDS on their bands.

I can't see there being a chemical in it that would actually harm you in anyway otherwise Disney would not give out the product. Also if it did do harm we would hear about it. I have not heard of any such issues. Personally I think it's nothing to worry about.

Could be whatever powers the battery... or the plastic if it has BPA in it,
But she and others concerned are perfect customers for the key chain fob for the new MB

I wonder if it's PVC. The materials don't seem to be made out of the same stuff that has BPA, but I am not an expert. It could also be one of the other nasties that you tend to find in flexible plastics. reuseit.com has a great selection of reusable, environmentally friendly (chemical friendly too) items. They also specify where it's made, ie China or not. The Environmental Working Group has a lot of info about makeups, cosmetics, and other things we put on our bodies. The safest hair and body care products I have found are from California Baby. You can mail order in bulk, but they are really expensive. Monterrey Bay Aquarium has info about the best choices for seafood, based on sustainability and purity. Good luck! Trying is better than nothing. Sometimes, you do have to let them eat that bright blue frosting, only occasionally though:rotfl:

Sorry to derail the conversation.
