News Round Up 2016

This from a team that closed Jaws to make Diagon Alley, closed Disaster to make Fast and Furious, and closed Twister to make a Late Night with Jimmy Fallon "ride".

Jaws was a great, classic ride and always fun, but I think that Diagon Alley and Hogwarts Express were great replacements. I can't comment on F&F and the Jimmy Fallon "ride" but I think that both Disaster and Twister were just about used up and not all that appealing any more.

They should have replaced the two WORST attractions at USF/IOA however ... the Poseidon walk-through noise-fest and the Sindbad stunt show ... also a noise-fest with flashes popping in your face as a bonus.

And Dr. Doom's Fearfall.

Not quite sure if changing a 10 year old ride truly counts as "ruining history". Also not quite sure a 10 year old ride needed changing in the first place, but that's neither here nor there.

While I'm not a fan of the change, I think everything will eventually settle itself out. They've made this change and a bunch of people hate it. I don't think this one change will keep people from going to the park. A person is going to stop going when they start disliking the majority of the park. There's too many other things to do besides Tower of Terror that will keep people going.

Also, if the quick turnaround on this happens like they expect, couldn't that also mean that it could be changed back rather quickly? If this sole change caused Tower of Terror to now be a walk on at all times (for all the wrong reasons) you'd think someone in California would bump their heads and decide to change it back.

I am typically a nostalgic person, but I can't defend Jaws. That ride evolved into something very, very bad. It was low budget Jungle Cruise without the humor. Best case, it needed an overhaul. It also seemed that the ride had serious durability issues in it deteriorated quickly with probably a greater than average down time.

It is easy to see what makes Universal different when talking about replacing classic rides. Unlike Disney, Uni used to be a very dated and dull park prior to Potter in my humble opinion. Even those who think Jaws was a classic know how dated that ride used to be.

I heard a rumor that Disney will install Coke Freestyle machines at all resorts. Anyone else heard this?

I like the idea of the machines but the flavor additives don't taste right to me.

I went to Universal in 2014 to check out all the Harry Potter stuff. I was kind of embarrassed for the Twister attraction. That movie came out in 1996 and hasn't aged very well. Standing in one place watching things fall down wasn't too exciting.

Inam not a fan also I think I read a negative of them at Universal is they don't give out water.

Jaws in it's final year(s) of operation was a shadow of Jaws in it's first few years. The ride was constantly blowing budget, required massive downtime for fixes, and took up a *huge* chunk of park space. For a while, the ride had even gone seasonal and only opened during massively busy times.

I'm not a huge fan of the Gringotts ride, but the Diagon area as a whole must be bringing in exponential amounts of money compared to Jaws. It's a magical cash cow over there at this point, and that's before you even get into the number of park hoppers and such it is promoting by simply having that silly train ride.

Twister was a relic. The only show/ride that felt more dated than Twister was/is the Terminator experience. It was kind of neat to see Twister the first time, but it was no longer even a realistic representation of how movies are filmed anymore. Now, everything they showed in that ride, would be done via green screen. Ironically, that is what Disaster *tried* to capture, but the scenes they had volunteers film were so short and flashed during their movie trailer so quickly, that it was difficult to even make out what was going on. And ultimately, in the end Disaster was just a fancy front end thrown on top of an even older ride, Earthquake.

I agree that the remnants of the Lost Continent could make an exit, but it would have made zero sense to put F&F or Fallon there. Those things distinctly belong on the USF side.

At this point, it is more of a matter of finding something that fits between Suessland and Hogwarts than anything else.

I maintain that Toon Lagoon is worse than the Lost Continent though. Tons of shops marked by irrelevant characters, and even if you happen to like those characters, the shops themselves contain absolutely nothing related to them. And the actual rides aren't so great either. The line for Ripsaw Falls is miserable, and more like a Six Flags line than a Universal or Disney line. Lots of switch back ramps with plain colored walls and nothing to look at. I only remember one room having any entertainment in it, and it was a few talking heads that kept repeating themselves. Then the ride itself isn't even themed for over half of it. You just float around and occasionally you see a character rocking back and forth. The facade of that ride is the most impressive thing about it.

The Bilgerat Barges are ok if you like that sort of thing, but it's a 100% soaking to go on that ride. It could easily be rethemed to something else if they want to keep a water ride on premises.

Might be easier to control the RFID with that. As long as the iced tea isn't controlled I'm fine. I don't drink soda.

I like Toon Lagoon but I agree that the characters are mostly irrelevant and parts lack good themeing. And I have to say the Popeye ride is THE BEST ride of it's type.
