News Round Up 2016

One interesting thing to add to the "discussion"...insider said that when it is announced, it will cause some debate. It was also said that when it is finally announced, everybody will understand why it couldn't be announced now -- as if some sort of detail was not ironed out in contracts to allow it.

That is a true peak curiousity comment - but makes me think it's a lot of smoke blowing. Can't even imagine a NEW ride causing a lot of debate. (Replacing/overlaying an old ride yes - but this doesn't sound like that.) Can't even speculate.

I'm intrigued...but thoroughly confused now

While I'm having trouble finding a source for this, I distinctly remember reading that MMC has been canceled in it's current form. However, a spin-off called Mickey and the Roadster Racers is set to debut next year. Disney seems adverse to building an attraction based on television shows. Generally we just get M&G's and maybe a stage show in that realm.

The frozen ride is the fastest turn around time I've ever seen at Disney in regards to adaptation of a property, and that only took one of the highest grossing original films in the companies history to make happen (not to mention it was *easily* the most merchandised). It was also a reskin, even if a nice one, which meant the risk was lower. It would have been hard to put a ride in the place of Maelstrom that pulled in less people. Not that maelstrom wasn't good, but I think anyone here would have trouble stating that it was popular.

So my guess is we get something based on a classic, proven, property.

Thanks for the info about the show. Hope whatever the new show is holds my fiancee's nephews attention.

Also, just to be clear, I don't think it will be Disney Junior either, I was posing the question directly to the poster I quoted since the rumor was that it's not Pixar or Marvel and it is an e-ticket. No matter your definiton of e-ticket, I don't see any Disney Junior property being more popular than some of the other things that will come to Hollywood Studios.

Just wanted to clear that up :)

Hey, I think it is a totally fair question. Disney Jr. properties shouldn't have any stigma against them. My daughter and son were both born during the time of the current MMC, and both of them loved it. As a matter of fact, a specific easter episode with "funny bunny pete" was the first show my daughter was ever enamored with and wanted to watch nonstop on repeat. Since then they have both latched on to Sophia, Miles, and a multitude of other shows on the network. When we visited DHS last Dec, I'd say that the DisJr stuff was probably their favorite part of the park. We did the character lunch, sat down for the puppet show, etc. So a dark ride that actually goes through those worlds would likely be very popular. I think the problem then becomes that these shows don't stay on for that long in the grand scheme of things.

The last thing they want is to be stuck with a kids zone similar to Universal's. I love a lot of things about Universal, but their kids section is a complete joke. But that's what happens when you build an area on properties like Woody Woodpecker, Fievel the Mouse, Barney the Dinosaur, and Curious George. The 'newest' character the have in there is Spongebob Squarepants, and for those who aren't keeping score at home, he has been on the air for 17 years (since 1999). That makes him 2-3 times older than the majority of kids running around the play area. That's just... sad.

In 10 years, the DisJr lineup could be anything. It might be just as good, or it might disappear very similar to the classic Disney afterschool lineup of the 90's (Ducktales, TaleSpin, Darkwing Duck).

Personally, I'd love to see something based off of the short lived cartoon House of Mouse (even if it was just a restaurant). If you never saw it, it was a cartoon variety shows held together by vignettes of Mickey and crew running a nightclub populated with characters (both good and bad) from every Disney cartoon/movie to date. Lots of great visual sight gags. If someone turns a fan on, Pocahontas is sure to pop up so her hair can blow back. Even if very few people have seen or remember the show, I think it works simply because you don't need to know the shows premise to understand that this is a nightclub full of crazy personalities. And it gives them a lot of latitude, as they could easily drop in new characters as new movies get made.

I don't think you'd ever get a RIDE based on Disney Junior. (Previously Playhouse Disney - remember that?) The Disney Junior show has gone through at least FIVE iterations I can think of. When we first brought our daughter to see it - it featured Bear in the Big Blue House, JoJo's Circus, Stanley, and The Book of Pooh. Do kids remember ANY of those shows today? This was only 10 years ago mind you! (And Bear in the Big Blue House was a FANTASTIC show.) Later they replaced that with Mickey Mouse Clubhose, Handy Manny, Little Einstiens, and My Friends Tigger and Pooh - do kids today remember those last three? That was all of SIX years ago.

So yeah, and Disney Junior ride would be a TERRIBLE idea. Built with current faves Jake and the Neverland Pirates, Doc McStuffins, and Sophia the First, regardless of how good the shows are (and they are pretty good for what they are) 5 years from now these shows will be nothing but a memory.

House of Mouse was a clever show - but don't expect any resurgence anytime soon.

I do agree that some such as Jake, Sofia, Doc McStuffins, are a little risky, however there are some Disney Jr. properties that are low risk. Tinkerbell is probably fairly safe, popular property (and you could even re-use some Honey I shrunk the kids materials). Tinkerbell is a pretty timeless character that is never going away. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is probably pretty safe, but I am not sure it really fits as the best choice for DHS. Winnie the Pooh is not going away and a good choice. These all seem more likely than recent movie releases. Inside Out seems too good a fit for Epcot to waste on DHS. Zootopia fits AK. Most of the others are too risky.

New E ride, non thrill, no current IP in park, causes debate?

Well, there are a number of things that can cause debate. Song of the South style banned movie. Height requirement at 44" for non thrill, princesses.

Yeah, I got nothin.

The subject matter is sensitive for the time? I.E. there's an alligator involved (PatF?).

The IP is not Disney's? I.E. Wreck It Ralph, or even less likely Studio Ghibli. These could explain the delay, but would only cause debate amongst those kinds of fans that want all the mouse all the time. No-one else would care.

It conflicts with some current/planned feature from Shanghai? Again, could explain the delay, ala Soarin, but there's no obvious source of contention here.

It is totally out of theme for 'Hollywood Studios' and will be announced when the park gets its new name?

I don't like that you can see the construction site from Big Thunder Mountain, but hey, people will be able to catch a glimpse of Star Wars land's progress very easily.

As far as Hollywood Studios... I'm thinking Indy could be getting something new over there. It's already in the park. It's popular. It's being revived with sequels and reboots.
