News Round Up 2016

The one thing I am curious about (or maybe even concerned about) is the larger background story in the Star Wars universe. Lucas absolutely loved to repeat ideas and concepts throughout his movies. What we will soon have, barring the stand alone films, will be three trilogies. The first group of prequels were just not good. But the larger story at that point was the creation of the Empire and the destruction of the Old Republic. The second trilogy was the Empire and the Rebel Alliance duking it out, with Luke on the Light Side and Darth on the Dark Side. The current trilogy at least seems to be resetting the stage for another epic battle between the First Order (Empire) and Resistance (Rebel Alliance), with Rey and Ben Solo representing both sides of the force. At least now, it would seem a very similar structure. If episodes 7, 8 and 9 end up churning out billions upon billions of dollars (and they will), will Disney create yet another trilogy, that has an empire fighting a resistance with yet again a Light Side warrior pitted against a Dark Side warrior, ad infinitum? I think that even for me, being the huge Star Wars fan that I am, that would start to get redundant.

Now I know that we don't know what is happening with episodes 8 and 9 and who knows, maybe the remaining movies of this trilogy will veer away from the standard concepts we found so entertaining in episodes 4, 5 and 6. But I don't know. I have this feeling that the current trilogy will end up being similarly structured. This is why I find myself so eagerly anticipating the stand alone films. There should be a more unfamiliar feeling to them, even though they will take place in the EU timeline somewhere and will also serve as official canon moving forward. I will appreciate the honing in on a smaller group of individuals, with the movie itself not having the responsibility of having to advance the greater story forward.

It will be enjoyable to see how the Star Wars universe is handled by Ms. Kennedy over the next several years. The Marvel movies I still enjoy so I am hoping to see the same success with the Star Wars franchise.

I do agree that after 7, 8 and 9 - being the "core" story - that they then could spend some time telling some of the "between" stories. We'll see, there is plenty of stories to tell - as you say hopefully it just doesn't keep being a rehash of the same thing. (And please let's stop having to destroy the "world destroying" weapon in the climax.)

It is getting old. Lucas originally wanted to do it just once at the end of the first trilogy. But SW was untested back then and he figured the first movie needed a big finale to bring people in.

This creates weakness in Jedi, and in TFA. Similar problem with the Dick Donner cut of Superman II.

That's taking the issue waaaay too far. When you talk about Tangled, Princes and the Frog, Frozen, Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, Brave or Alladin, you always think of their lead female's skills and how independent they are compared to their predecessors. Of course there are a lot of male characters in those movies. That's what makes them marketable. When your protagonist is a female you want to have male characters to appeal to everyone.

OK - getting way off topic here - but anything Lucas says about planning the original as a Trilogy before the first one came out is him re-writing history, which he does frequently. It's the same as him saying he knew Luke and Leia were brother/sister when he wrote the first movie. There's way to much sexual tension going on between them in that first movie for that to be the case.

They are going to turn large amounts of the average public off with the merchandising onslaught...they would be wise to not tiptoe the waters of a complete rollout of new merchandise for every six months.

I don't think the merch will be nearly as bad as it was for Ep 1-3. That was where Lucas made his money. He had 100% rights to all merch, which is why we saw Yoda and Vader on everything from pepsi cans to twinkies. I mean sure, Disney merchandises their movies, but not nearly to the point of saturation that Lucas pulled.

We can hope Disney won't be that silly...can't say I fully trust them though...

i think Lucas's big mistakes are easy to zero In on:
1. Love of computers to save money
2. A complete failure to understand what the first movies were/became or a refusal to accept why they were loved
3.really cheap crap.

Looks great but I just can't visualize where they are going to fit all the crowds who would like to see the show?

I'm totally stumped. It looks like it's less than 1/3 the size of Fantasmic's theater, although maybe that's just my misperception since I haven't seen it in person. If they often fill Fantasmic!, how will everyone ever get to see this show, even if they're doing 3 shows a night? World of Color can be no fun to get a spot, but I'm more scared of this theater.

Is it really a "theater? Seems
More open air that can lend the walkways around and behind to passers by...

You have to think they would have considered how disasterous an under capacity installation would be in AK, right? Where you can't fix such a mistake due to the excessive landscaping...

I mean...what kinda clowns wouldn't think of that, right?

I know nothing has been confirmed but I thought I heard it would open in April...now possibly May. Do most projects end up going over projected openings?? Rumors are Soarin will open in summer. I'm starting to think that will be more likely July rather than June? Wouldn't they try to open it the same time as the new Disney resort opening up? I know it's way too early but just curious....

Over heard everything from March to May I wouldn't worry too much. Disney doesn't announced dates because they don't want to get behind and then have to push that date back.

when lucas was doing promotions for empire strikes back he revealed that the plan was for 9 movies. he was going to finish the first trilogy, then do the first three to tell about how vader became vader, and finally set the last three 30 years after the empire was defeated to show what happened to the new government. He even said at the time that he wasnt sure if the three heros or anyone else from the current movies would be in the last three. Fast forward to the release of Return of the jedi and lucas annouced that he was taking a break from star wars because he needed to focus on his family and also the technology he wanted to use hadn;t been perfected yet. So he takes time off and still gets divorced. He has stated several times that the only reason that 1-3 got made was that he could do it all within a computer and didnt need puppets or green screens. He has also stated several times that he made them in order to answer the ongoing questions the fans had and it gave him control of the story. Also this story has turned into not only an epic story of light vs. dark but also the story of a dynastic family. The skywalkers.
