News Round Up 2016

OK - getting way off topic here - but anything Lucas says about planning the original as a Trilogy before the first one came out is him re-writing history, which he does frequently. It's the same as him saying he knew Luke and Leia were brother/sister when he wrote the first movie. There's way to much sexual tension going on between them in that first movie for that to be the case.

Unless Lucas is just weird:crazy2: Which we know he is, but not confirmed in that way;)

Is it really a "theater? Seems
More open air that can lend the walkways around and behind to passers by...

You have to think they would have considered how disasterous an under capacity installation would be in AK, right? Where you can't fix such a mistake due to the excessive landscaping...

I mean...what kinda clowns wouldn't think of that, right?

I'm sure I just have a skewed SoCal notion of "theater"... Seats indoor or out mean "theater" to me. :-) And most of the time I'm amazed no one throws popcorn at the poor world of color cm's who have to go around telling people they have to stand. I pity the poor cm's in charge of turning standby away for rol.

One of Josh's easywdw entries also talks about how there isn't much standing room nearby. Looks like a lot of trees in the way to me. This could be a nightmare.

Well...that's what I was afraid of...lack of standing room.

So basically if the show is a hit - it's a disaster. Good planning, wdi!!

I'm not too attached to the distinction of "theaters" either. I think anyplace that is meant to be used completely - like a Disney park - lessens the need for traditional "seating"

But - in the case of wdw travelers - they're psychotic about some of this stuff. Right now, there are probably hundreds of people writing posts about "where/ what strategies do you have for finding the best places to view WISHES!!!!/illuminations/fantastic ?!?!?!?"

To which my response is always "does it really matter?" Followed up by "they're 13,17,16 years old...where's the mystery at this point?"

It's some kinda east coast regional psychosis. Maybe swamp gas makes you crazy?

when lucas was doing promotions for empire strikes back he revealed that the plan was for 9 movies. he was going to finish the first trilogy, then do the first three to tell about how vader became vader, and finally set the last three 30 years after the empire was defeated to show what happened to the new government.

Everything you said is true - but it's revisionist to say he had the 9 movies planned from the beginning i.e before Episode IV was released. The original concept was - well Buck Rodgers - but the original movie was conceived as a middle piece of a story, but while he might have had ideas floating around, there is no way he had a plan laid out for 3 movies. Back in 1977 that just simply wasn't done - and there's no way he thought this was going to be that big a success. He didn't start talking about trilogy and 9 movies until around the time of Empire...when he realized what a cash cow he had.

Lucas and Star Wars fans have spent a lot of time mythologizing the creation of Star Wars. There very clearly was not detailed outline of 3 movies never mind 9. He may have had a few pages of plot ideas but that is as far as it goes. The continuity between Star Wars and the rest of that trilogy is iffy in places and (perhaps even more damning) the continuity between the original trilogy and the prequels is off too.

I'd say Illuminations sorta matters as if you're near Canada or between Canada and the walkway to FW you may have lots of trees in the way. That said, I've never had a bad spot for Wishes or Fantasmic (though I didn't like being in the 2nd row that one time). I'm not psychotic about where we are for any of the shows but once I'd like to be between Mexico-Norway to watch Illuminations but I also refuse to sit around and wait for an hour just to get a spot.

if you noticed i said while he was doing promotion for Empire Strikes back, these days episode V. No real star wars fan would believe that the original movie was not made as a stand a lone film. It wasn;t until it became a huge hit and the fact that the villain was convenietly not on the deathstar at the time of it's destruction that the idea of 9 movies came to lucas's mind. If he had orginally thought of 9 films let alone a trilogy, he would have started with Episode 1 not 4.

When your protagonist is a female you want to have male characters to appeal to everyone.

That right there is why this article was written. Why does a movie with a female protagonist need male characters to be marketable? Movies with male protagonists aren't given females to make it marketable. The whole idea that females need males to be successful is what the modern movies are moving away from as a part of their plot, why shouldn't their character makeup follow suit?

A film doesn't need males to be successful. It needs males to appeal to men. There's nothing wrong with boys liking princesses or girls liking action heroes, but by nature boys gravitate towards male characters and girls gravitate towards female characters. It's simple marketing. If your protagonist is female, there's no reason for a boy to go watch a ''girly'' film (that's not my view, by the way).

I get your point though, and I agree. We should be able to enjoy a film no matter who is the protagonist. However, it's undeniable that female characters have become stronger, more independent and capable of anything. I really think that the number of lines in a movie that are spoken by males or females is beyond the point. Nobody talked about General Shang when they watched Mulan. They actually talked about Mulan.

Why? Mainly because of social conditioning. Which is again part of the point of the article. You don't change that by continuing to follow the same pattern.

You could argue that the pattern has changed though. There are thousands of little boys who are dying to go meet Elsa, millions who loved Rey and tons of people who thought Mulan and Belle were true role models, including lots of males who are not ashamed to admit their favorite character is a princess.

It's still an issue? Of course. Social conditioning tells us girls have to like girly stuff and boys have to enjoy manly stuff. This is still a business, and Disney can't afford to fully change the pattern and expect males all around the world to accept it and purchase a ticket for their movie. It's still a huge jump from the princesses we know from the early Disney stuff, and lead female characters are now true role models. From a business perspective you have to attract both boys and girls. That's how it is.

I'm going to stop here because I don't want to get the thread off topic, but how much of the movie did Mulan spend as a man? And how much was Mulan's character utilized compared to Mushu (his whole feature in DHS)? And a whole other rabbit trail the article didn't focus on was the transformation of POC compared to other characters (Tiana/Naveen -> Frogs, Kuzco -> Llama, Kenai -> Bear, Mulan -> man, etc)
