>>>There is US 27 at the end of 192 that already goes north/south ...

The proposed freeway east of US 27 and west of Disney World was mentioned to me in a tour of the Orange Lake resort (at which I got a free ticket to Universal Studios). Anyway a north south freeway here would be an advantageous alternative to US 27 in that there would be no traffic lights.

if you find the maps of the 'master plan' at wdwmagic, it shows the new highway with connections to current wdw roadways.

You can also see the proposed highway in the Orlando section of the AAA Florida Guide.

I just got back from a 7-day stay. I have a friend who has been there for years. He told me that there are real concerns about AK. With everything else being slow right now, a 5th park is out of the question. They want to build up what they have, especially AK. I even heard this confimed at a recent press conference with one of the big wigs down there....

My vote is for the beastly kingdom...seems to go with all the other rumors.

There isn't any traffic lights on US-27 near 192 for 12 miles in either direction.
It's 65 mph 4 lane divided highway. Besides, US 27 has little to no traffic, and there is only 6 miles between Main Gate and US 27.

Well actually prior to 9/11 Disney was seriously working on adding a 5th park. That all changed of course.

Wonder why 9/11 made Disney change it's mind? Or maybe it was just a coincidence?

9/11 caused a major change in the travel industry. People flat out stopped traveling for a while. Disney had trouble filling rooms for a bit. The whole industry saw the same thing though. Why build something when people aren't coming like they were?

Yes, but it's more busier then it's ever been, so why not reconsider? Maybe in the future they will. It probably makes more sense to just add onto the 4 parks that are already there.

There is no reason to build a 5th park right now. They need to fix the three parks that aren't MK. A 5th park would cannabilize attendance at the other parks right now.

Yes, I agree, they definitely need to update Epcot. I will never understand why they took away Maelstrom. I understand they needed a quick fix for the frozen ride but I will never forgive Disney for taking away one of our favorite rides. My kids still talk about it. Was a classic. Why take away a ride that so many people liked?

But since you brought it up...it's a myth that 9/11 caused a travel stop For Disney...it started 6 months before.

I mean I wasn't doing much more than watching cartoons and coloring when 9/11 happened but isn't it true that 9/11 did cause a decrease in travel for a while?

Of course it did...

But the reality is that after the milennium thing ended in Jan of 2001...wdw was adrift a bit.

That promo worked to draw a lot of people in that may not have come otherwise...just like the pink castle promo in 97. It was the zenith of that type of marketing push.

Travel patterns were vastly different then too...you didn't have masses of off season crowds. Peaks were tied to the American school calendar more or less. DVC was probably no more than 1/5th the membership as it is now. They didn't have that kind of repeat force built up yet.

They didn't know what to do. Problems at ak were becoming very clear...pleasure island and downtown hit a wall....failures in the "reinvention" of Epcot. Bigtime corporate problems that affected decision making.

It was a real low point...and THEN politics happened.

I mean...I saw the numbers and forecasts...in realtime...I was there. So it's somewhat fresh on the mind.

I love it when a 16 year old thread comes back up...

Scroll up and look at the dates, people...

This thread ended in August 2001

Yes, but the topics are still sometimes relevant, so what's the difference if people add some comments to the thread?

Are you 100% sure it's never going to happen? Do you have inside info? I've seen that rumor around here for years. Who know's what could happen?
We won't be seeing a fifth gate within the next five years that's certain. They need to finish the other work first.
