We were planning on buying a pop up or small travel trailer this spring, but are now talking about getting a used class c. We were thinking that with the long distance drives we do (cross country) an RV would be much more convenient. We would only be able to afford an older (90's) RV though. (our budget is about 15,000). Is that asking for trouble?
Which way would you go? My husband does know how to work on cars, but that doesn't mean he wants to. :)

I would think through the types of things you do when you travel...do you do overnights and get back on the road right away or do you always stay a couple of days? Do you like to drop anchor then go site seeing? With a trailer you have your TV to go sightseeing with, with a motorhome you'll need to tow a vehicle if you want to be able to park it and set up and then go out and about without taking the RV. There are pros and cons to both and different options for different needs. I'm a bit inclined to the pop-up route ;) Then there's always the full height TTs to think about too...

There are probably many 90's model class C's out there that are still in good condition. Since you have never owned a motorhome, I would advise taking a friend or someone along who is familiar with them to help you look over them before you make a final selection.

Check the roof, escpecially if it is a membrane type, to make sure it is clean & still sealed, with no bubbles. Always figure, unless it has been done recently, to put new sealant on the roof seams, vents, etc.

Check the exterior sidewalls for delamination, bubble or ripples that you can press down.

Check all the appliances, generator, etc. to make sure they work, then drive it to your mechanic to look the engine over. Just be thorough.

As with any used motorhome or vehicle I have bought, unless I can tell it has just been done, I replace all belts, hoses, new spark plugs, change oil & filter on the engine & generator. Then clean, treat, & reseal the roof.

Good luck on whatever you decide.
