Hi all -- I've never looked into renting points before (and not sure if this is the right board for all of these questions...), so I'm wondering if someone can point to the right place to get a lot of newcomer questions answered.

Unfortunately, it isn't in our budget to buy a property right now. But I would like to possibly rent points. Here are my questions:

1. Do you have to rent all of the points you need or if you can only get a partial amount, can you 'pay' for the rest some other way?
2. Who makes the reservation? The renter or the owner?
3. How is the actual transaction handled? Passing of money? Making deposit? Etc.? I'm sure there must be some safeguards for each side of the transaction...

As you can see, I'm a beginner. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

1. Do you have to rent all of the points you need or if you can only get a partial amount, can you 'pay' for the rest some other way?

You have to rent enough for complete nights. In other words, if 5 nights is 100 points, you have to rent 100. You could add additional nights by getting a reservation thorugh CRO and linking the reservation.

2. Who makes the reservation? The renter or the owner?

Owner. The owner controls the reservation. but puts it in your name.

3. How is the actual transaction handled? Passing of money? Making deposit? Etc.? I'm sure there must be some safeguards for each side of the transaction...

That's between you and the owner to negotiate. DVC does not get involved in this in any way if there is a problem. Suggest you ask the owner for references or look for someone who is a frequent poster on these boards.

DVC members can make a reservation for a non-member (in the name of the non-member) and rent that reservation to you. Members cannot make a reservation for any single day using a combination of points and cash.

The transaction itself is between parties and you should satisfy yourself that the terms are satisfactory.

In general, the reservation is not as flexible as it would be directly thru Disney, but you can often find a real discount by renting from a DVC member. Make sure to have an idea of what the same room would cost thru Disney before entering into a rental.

Okay -- newcomer still has questions...

If I need more points than what I can get from a single person, then would I be able to rent points from two different people but have all of the points applied to a single reservation? It sounds like not but just want to make sure...

Could someone (or a few someone's) who have done this let me know how you actually handled the transaction? You can email me directly at rschollmeyer@runbox.com if you don't want to post. I'm just curious if money is put into escrow, or if contracts are used, or if people just know each other, or what...

Sorry if I'm making this more complicated than it is.:o Thanks for your help.

You could have one member reserve some of the nights and another reserve the others. The member making the later reservations can request that the two reservations be linked together.

Asking a member to transfer points to another member may be asking too much, but you can always try. I'd sure see what can be done by one member if at all possible.

Good luck!
