Such a sad story on local news at 6. A newborn was found dead last Wednesday on the Carnival Dream - the FBI is investigating. The mother did not return to Port Canaveral with the ship:

PORT CANAVERAL --
The FBI confirms it is investigating the death of a newborn on a Carnival cruise ship.

The FBI says it was contacted Saturday morning when the Carnival Dream arrived at Port Canaveral. Full details have not come out yet, but the FBI says the mother of the child is not from Florida, and has not returned to the US yet. We also know that whatever happened, it involved a passenger from the US and not a crew member.

The FBI says Carnival is cooperating, and that the company made the call to the agency

A full-term newborn was found dead Wednesday aboard a Carnival cruise ship that arrived Saturday at Port Canaveral. The FBI confirms that the infant's mother was a U.S.-born passenger on the ship.

The identity of the 20 year-old baby's mother has not been released; she was detained pending further investigation.

The Carnival Dream was docked at Port Canaveral after a seven day cruise to the Eastern Caribbean. According to a Carnival spokesman, the ship was on schedule to depart for its next voyage at around 5 p.m. after the FBI completed its investigation at the port

"Full term" newborn. Wonder if the mom panicked or something? The other station (WESH) reported the baby was found in a closet but their link is not up yet. If the room steward found it OMG he/she probably is still in shock... ugh. :guilty:

An incredibly sad story.
Thought's to the mother who must be distressed beyond belief.

Personally, I wouldn't have thought it necessary to repost on a forum.

How did she get on the ship if she was that far along?

Every time I've cruised, I've only been asked if I was pregnant. I suppose she could have said no. If she were overweight, or just one of those women who don't show much, it probably wouldn't have been questioned. They don't require you to prove that you aren't.

Also, I know most people don't believe it, but some women truly don't know they are pregnant until they actually have the baby. It is possible, although I personally think it would be difficult to NOT know... :confused3

It can be difficult to know. My MIL went into labor without ever knowing she was pregnant, and I personally delivered 3 1/2 weeks after finding out I was pregnant. Turns out I was about 40 weeks when we found out I was pregnant. In my opinion, it's easy NOT to realize, but that's not necessarily the case here.

Wow that's crazy and extremely odd. Yes it's awefull the poor child. But what are the odds a pregnant woman either doesn't know she's pregnant or lies to get on board, then goes into labour why not call for help?, then what are the chances the child didn't survive? It's nuts wow just seems so out there. It's a horribly tragic story.

Admin's or Mod's please shut this thread.

The Mother isn't going to read it, and therefor best wishes and my thought's will also land on deaf ear's.
It serves no purpose other than to spread the word of someone's tragedy, and the loss of an infant's life.

To be fair...this thread is no different than the threads about people jumping off/falling overboard/fires, etc......those are also tragedies and we discuss those topics on these boards.

It can stay for now, as long as it does not get out of hand.

Actually it is informative. Any pregnant women thinking of lieing there way on board might just think twice now. It also informs people that anything really can happen on board.

Although I find the thread distasteful, I respect your decision mmouse37.

However, given the amount of information given in the previous news links, I'm not sure how much more can be discussed, apart from how terribly upset/disturbed/devastated/beyond distressed the mother must have been to have done what she was reported to have done.

I literally have nothing more to say.

I don't have a problem at all with this thread...but I will also add people can talk about nothing for 30 plus pages on these boards. :rotfl2: I can do it with the best of them! ;)

I do think it's said, and I am curious to the real full sotry.
I had a friend who had 2 children and never knew she was pregnant for the third. She was going through a divorce and had gained weight (she was up and down on the scale all the time) one night she wasn't feeling good and asked her sister to take her to the hospital. She said she was felling awful and cramping like labor. At the hopsital she found out she was pregnant and really in labor. What a shock to all of us! :scared1:

What I don't understand about the story, and I haven't looked at the links is they said the mother didn't return to the US, but then it says the mother is detained by the FBI. So where did they find her at? That part is a little strange. :confused3

Thats the part that I dont understand either, I was trying to figure out if she never got back on at a port or what the deal was for her not to be back in the US.

Someone needs to pay more attention to their editing. The baby was not 20 years old.

What a shame....

There's nothing wrong with that sentence -- it's possessive as noted by the "baby's mother" comment. It's not saying the baby was 20-years-old.

I agree that while it's not a pleasant subject, it's no different than other stories posted about tragedies onboard ships. My thoughts go out to the mother. Maybe the baby was stillborn and she panicked.

Somewhat related question - at what age do you think it is ok to take a healthy baby on a cruise?

I think they have to be 3 months to go on DCL. I guess it depends on the family. I personally wouldn't want to take one that small, but for selfish reasons. I just know I wouldn't have as good of a time, as little babies are a lot of work and I would be stuck in a room for naps, or I would need to have a stroller for the child at almost all times, etc. it can be doen, but for me, it wouldn't be ideal. I know others can do it with no problem though.
I have a client who wil lbe sailing with an 8 month old next year. (she has already booked before the baby is even born). I am now very interested in how everything works so I can help make it easy for her. I never knew anyone personally who travel with a child that young before.

I have also heard of people going to WDW with a baby just a few weeks old. Again, thats not for me, but many people have no problems doing it.

<snip>

This is perhaps off on a tangent, but as I have nothing new or different to say about the situation, if we strive for clarity in our writing, wouldn't a better sentence construction be:
'The identity of the baby's 20-year-old mother....' rather than '...the 20-year-old baby's mother...' ?

I thought it too, would think a professional journalist would write a little bit clearer...
