Welcome newbie

Book as much ahead as posible. That way when you get there you can relax and play. I see your there in Oct dont forget to bring costumes for Halloween. Also stuff to decorate your site.

When are you going in October? I am organizing FW October Fest happy hour.

Welcome to da fort.......

Beware camping there can be very addicting.....

:welcome:

I am going Sept 28 till Oct 6th. when do campers start decorating for halloween?

Well, it's up to you to decide if you want to decorate or not. September might be a TAD bit early, but I see nothing wrong anytime in October with decorating for Halloween.

Chances are, you won't see very many other decorations up at that time, but if you want to do it, go ahead! Trust me, you and passerby's will more than enjoy it, decorating is part of what makes Fort Wilderness unique amongst Disney resorts!

Oh, and welcome, you're going to have a blast!

Welcome! We've never camped at FW before so we're learning along with you...

We decided to purchase the DDP(disney dining plan) for the first 4 nights of our 8night stay. Had to make two reservations(the first one has the park tickets needed for the DDP) to make that happen. We used AAA. For us this worked out best so we could afford DDP for character meals. For our family (dh, me, DD-5, DD-10) it's not worth $500 for DDP for our last 4 nights. So for the last 4 nights we plan to eat one meal at the parks each day out of pocket, use our Planet Hollywood voucher (from AAA), make crockpot meals and have pizza delivered to FW (I'll check my notes and edit the post with the pizza place that delivers)

Have a great time!

when camping is the disney meal plan really worth it?

Well, depends on how much you plan on eating at your campsite. If you plan on having a lot of meals at "home", then no, don't get the dining plan. We eat at the camper a lot, almost every breakfast, rarely for lunch, and probably 50/50 for dinner. The DDP would be a total waste of money for us (although, it's not useful for us anyways because we are Florida resident pass holders).

I think the DDP is more geared towards traditional lodging, although you could certainly use it if you're staying at the Fort. I personally just find it better used at resorts that have a wider selection to choose from. Now, if you're spending all your time in the parks, then it could definitely be worth it there as well!
