....I know that I'm probably sounding like a nitwit, but what exactly am I looking at? I mean, I recognize the GCH and the Matterhorn in the distance, but other than that, I'm clueless...

That is the beginning of the walk into Downtown Disney. You follow that until you hit the parks. Disneyland will be on the left and California Adventure on the right. You can see security right at the very bottom of the pic and Earl of Sandwich on the bottom right.

(Former) ESPN Zone bottom left and Earl of Sandwich bottom right. You're basically looking straight down DTD to the esplanade.
