First-time scrapper, here!
Well, to be honest, I have not even done a first page layout yet, but I am getting a lot of ideas, and I have been doing a lot of shopping in my local stores for basic supplies.
Right now, I am interested in finding a place (on-line or local store) that has a good selection of paper punches. I have been to Michael's, AC Moore, and our local craft store Treasure Island, but none of them have a very good selection of punches, IMO.
Anyone know of on-line sites which offer scrapbooking supplies at discounted prices?

Shopping is half the fun of scrapping! There's a great thread pinned at the top of the board that lists scrapping stores.

Instead of punches have you thought about a cutting system? Punches were very hot several years ago but then came the sizzix, quickutz, wizzard and who knows what else!
Punches are nice but tend to stick or not work on heavy paper. and are rather bulky, harder to store (well maybe sizzix is just as tough)
Granted you can't get the cute Disney in the systems as you can in punches....

I too have made the decision to head into the land of scrapping. With 7+ trips behind me and 3 more planned, and over 2000 paper and digital photos, I have a lot of work to do, lol. :p

Love idea of the swaps, will join one soon. Saw the Cruise Swap1 and WOW! I am allowed to borrow ideas from that? :wave2:

Have been collecting supplies for several years, but have been chicken to make that first page. The shopping has been fun so far. Have acid free glue, die cuts, cardstock (need more, hitting Micheals on Tuesday) Have some 8'x11' papers, but really like the space provided by the 12x12 option. Have some Disney scrapping stickers, small papers, and frames. Have a trimmer, and some punches. Have some wire, bought for another project lots left.

Need:
Lettering: are stickers best to start? Love the style options at my local store. Can you print on vellum from wordart in Word, with an inkjet printer for titles?

Tags: is it best to get stencil set to start and use the cardstock? or buy pre made.

Eyelets: love the look they add! How expensive is the eyelet tool, generally?

Trim: ribbons, and fibers, right

Brads: love the options in colour and shapes

Rub ons: should I grab some or hold off until I know what I want to add to the page? Some one should make a printer rub-on paper, that we can print in reserve and add our own quotes, or have they already?

Is there a web-site that show how to make basic pockets, tags and envelopes, etc?

Sorry for all the questions but you ladies seem to be up to the challenge. This will be my main question site, as I live in Canada and all the scrap stores are at least and hour away. And my work week is Thursday to Monday, so no crop lessons for me! :sad2:

Go to www.allnightmedia.com for some great Mickey and Pooh punches. They also have a princess punch too.

If you have or know a creative memories consultant they sell punches: Square, circle, star, hexagon and heart. Some have websites where you can order from. Go to www.creativememories.com for a consultant locator.

PJPOOHBEAR-
I use a variety for lettering. I have my sizzlets lettering in playground, script, and classic. I am looking into getting the lollipop set and fruit smoothie set. You can get them much cheaper on ebay then in your local scrapbook store. I also do use letter stickers too. Depends on what style I am looking for and if the colors match. I use my sizzlets fonts when I want a little more oomph and/or the letter stickers aren't quite the right color to match the layout.

I personally don't print on vellum although you can. I do for very brief headings or phrases. I like to do my journaling in my own handwriting because it adds a personal touch - even if I am not the biggest fan of my own handwriting. But there is no right or wrong way. Find your style.

As for tags. I love my sizzix for making tags. They come out great everytime and no need to try to cut perfectly. I do believe you can buy premade as well.

Eyelets-
Not expensive for tools. I think a hammer is about 6 bucks and the setter is about 10. You need some sort of mat to hammer them on so not to ruin your table or working surface. I use my creative memories mat for these. You can also check out www.eyeletoutlet.com They have some that you can set without the tools.

That is about all I can help you with though, not sure about ribbons and such as I don't use them.

JrsyDebs - I have some Disney punches and broke down & bought a Sizzix for other die cuts. Our Michaels only carried 2 of the Disney punches, so I ended up ordering a couple from www.plaid.com (same as All Night Media). It wasn't discounted there though. If you use them, make sure you check out their clearance section. I got a Tigger punch pretty cheap on clearance.

Re: discounted prices - So far I've found the cheapest place to be BargainPack.com although sometimes I can get things for the same price at Michaels if they carry it. It actually costs less to ship from them though than it does to drive to Mikes. ;)

pjpoohbear - I started with stickers too. A kind Internet scrapping buddy has sent me some letters & DDIL has let me borrow her Sizzlet alpha but I really want to get my own. I've also decided I like the variety of using a variety of lettering. So I bought a set of alpha stamps (from Oriental Trading Co - much cheaper than even Wal-Mart or Mikes with 40% off!), some of those alpha beads, and I use the computer to do some titles as well.

As for tags - I tried cutting out my own, but even with a stencil I don't like the uneven edges....even with a paper trimmer I was having trouble getting the angle just right (I like the ones with the pointed tops). So I ended up getting a Sizzix tag die to use.

trim: I've used ribbons, "fibers", fun fur yarn...

I started out preferring eyelets to brads, but recently decided I like both equally well. I got the Making Memories tool kit - either on sale or with a coupon - but it was only ~ $10. The only thing is the eyelet setter it includes isn't the universal setter. It's a cheaper version. It sets the 1/8" & 3/16" okay - but I tried setting some rivets (flat topped eyelets) recently & it didn't work. The shaft on those was smaller than the 1/8" eyelets. So I'm going to have to go out & buy the universal. I don't mind the hammering - haven't had trouble with it & I have no baby napping to wake up. LOL

Rub ons - I'd like to know if there's a printer do-it-yourself rub on paper too! So far I've only gotten a few Disney rub ons - so I didn't need to wait to see what I'd want.

Here are a couple sites that I've used for basic instructions:

And this is just a place to ask beginner questions - or read what other beginners are asking about:

Eyelet question -I have never used eyelets in my scrapbook but I do have an eyelet setter for sewing and have used it several times - the kind that looks like a big wrench where you squeeze the eyelet. Will this work for the scrapbook eyelets or should I invest in a quietsetter or something like that? I haven't even checked to see if there is a limit on the size eyelet it will set (I would have to dig through my sewing stuff - which I haven't touched in a couple of years - to find it to see).

I'm not sure about the sewing type. I have one as well but didn't even bother to try it. Although I do put eyelets on my tags, I also want to put them places that just aren't within the reach of the setter - just like I wish I could use my punches further in from the edge. You know?

Let me go look for mine & I'll see if it even works for you.
