Newbie!! Renting Points Question - Can The Owner Revoke the Reservation?

I would never ever give someone a copy of my DL, a valid DL is valuable to someone w/out ID, a suspended/revoked DL, or warrants. Here’s how it plays out, someone gets pulled over or contacted for a citable offense, they hand the officer a fake DL w/ your real info. & the officer gives ‘them‘ a ticket, they no show in court or don’t pay the ticket & a bench warrant goes out for you. I assume criminal identity theft is less of a problem w/ the advent of real id & portable print scanners in patrol cars - but still far too risky for me to give someone a copy of my DL.

I believe in the recent FB DVC rental scam reported here on DIS the ‘owner’ claimed to have Aulani points, thus making it harder for those renting from him to verify.
I mean, I guess that is true... but if they are that sophisticated, they can just get that from the DarkWeb. I've spent the last 15 year of my 26 year career in Cyber Security and have I have a Master's degree in Security Technologies & Critical Infrastructure. I would hope you would trust me when I tell you that everyone's data has already been compromised.

I'm not going to worry about handing my driver's license over to someone I am prospecting to rent DVC points with. Especially if I have already established some sort of trust with information exchange and performed a little background research on.

Has nobody ever asked to scan your ID before?

and again, I am a proponent of blacking out all of the information you would not want them to have (like DL#, age, weight, eye color, whatever).

But, you win, I'm not here to argue. I'm here to gauge how sensitive people are to it. Clearly people are sensitive to it.

My mortgage company was hacked at least twice so I froze my credit years ago and assume every bad actor has at least some of my information. It sucks, but had to note that I agree with you there

I have 3,500 points and have around 20 reservations or so a year through rentals.

But thats just to cover the dues. But I would not worry if you have a contract, then you should be fine.

But the member always retains 100% control over the booking

Right on! I tend to do everything in "layers of security" so the whole DL was just another potential layer of verification. I don't really care one way or the other about that. I was just trying to gauge how folks here felt about it. I'm not particularly out to give an Owner the heebie-jeebies.
I've already checked with a number of Travel Insurance organizations. They have told me that their policies will cover private rentals as long as there is a contract and a receipt, so that's my minimum bar.
I'll be protected if I get scammed, and I'll make a backup reservation at rack-rate moderate that I'll plan to cancel down the road. Absolute worst case, I'm a Hilton Diamond, so I'd be able to get a room at Buena Vista Palace. I think (hope) that I've covered my bases.

Honestly, with a rental that is about all you can do! Scams are very rare but do occur.

Someone just has to be aware of the pros and cons of it all. We never rented because the savings was not worth the risk to us. But plenty do!!!

Same. I’d rather use that money to buy them and the piece of mind.
