I have 76 points I'm not using this year and have until 8/31 to bank them.

Next year I think I only need 65 points, which will leave me with over 160 points I could sell / transfer / rent.

What I'd like to do is take a Disney Cruise, so getting $10 - $11 for my 160 points would go a long way towards paying for the Cruise.

Can someone walk me through the process and let me know the chances of getting all my points rented or bought?

BTW: Home is Hilton Head, use year is March.

Thanks.

There are two effective ways to advertise your points.

1. Would be to make reservations yourself for a time period in future and advertise this vacation for a flat rate. The going rate is normally $10 per point.

2. Advertise the points you have available for transfer/rent and ask for $10 per point.

3. You should have response within a couple of weeks.

4. Once you have someone interested in renting your points you will call member services to check availability.

5. Once you have confirmed availabibility, you can make reservations under their name as the travelers and will receive a confirmation number.

6. Share the confirmation number with the renter so that the renter can confirm for themselves with Disney that the reservation has been made under their name.

7. Ask that the renter send a cashiers check for the full amount at least 30 days prior to the check-in date.

8. Once you receive and deposit the check, send the renter the paper copy of the reservation (Disney will send you the paper copy when you make reservations). If the renter does not send you the money, then you can cancel the reservation.

9. Wish your renter a great vacation.

Thanks. Seems easy.

Now is there any way to guage the chances that I'll actually get most of these points rented?

Hi-

I don't know if you are going to go ahead and rent, but my family and I are possibly planning a trip to disney at Christmas (check in 12/19, check out 12/24). We are interested in either a Boardwalk studio or an Old Cape May studio which though the points calculator comes out to either 40 or 45 points.

I don't know if you only want to rent those, but we would be possibly interested in them. I have found out that I believe that there is availability from other DVC owners.

Sorry if I am rushing you into thinking about renting, but thought that putting a bug in your ear about a newbie renter might make it an easier decision.

With a little patience and finding the right buyer, you will get at least most of the points rented.

You should ask for a deposit. I would ask for at least $200 unless the rental is less than 20 pts. Also... ask for final payment at least 45 days out. I prefer 60 days. The last thing you want is to have the reservation cancelled less than 30 days out with no money and no ability to fully restore your points. Set and agree to a cancellation policy. I would charge a cancellation fee just to let people know your time is worth something. No refunds within 31 days of travel, but they can re-book under the "holding" account policy guidelines. You need to spell it out for people, however, and everyone must agree.

I just rented out all my 175 points. It took about a week, and I bet I spent at least 25 hours answering questions, calling DVC, and formulating unique rental agreements for each prospective renter. I checked dates for 8 people, 3 were available, but only 1 ended up making a reservation.

What about point tranfering? For example, if a current DVC member needs, for example, 40 points to complete a vacation, could you transfer the points over their account (so they could make their own reservation)?

Oh my gosh- that is a lot of time for you to have spent. The last person I rented to was so informed with the DVC process- made it so nice. I think total was about 2 hours, if that, to work everything out and come to an agreement. I think I really lucked out with her! She also paid in full about 4 months in advance of our agreement. My kind of renter!

Ya, but I had to go through 7 other people to get to one that could close a deal.

There are simpler ways worth considering. You could offer a transfer to another member for less money. Use PayPal for the transaction and set up a conference call with MS. Once the phone call is done everything is complete with no further follow up on your end. I've done this in the past and it worked very well. You're dealing with another member and you don't have to educate them about DVC, and you don't get involved with reservations.

Some members get upset when they see people make reservations strictly to rent. It's one thing when plans change and you have to cancel a vacation, but making a reservation on speculation takes availability away from members who want to stay at DVC. Just my .02 worth.
