Hi, We will be visiting IOA and US for the first time next weekend. Kids are 8 and 10. Planning on buying a 2 day PP ticket. Staying on property. Here are my questions:

1. Do both parks open early for hotel guests? And if only one park is open early where is this listed on the park website?

2. Which HP section should we visit first? Does anyone have a touring plan for the HP section they can recommend?

3. How wet will we get on the water rides in IOA? Are there lockers for our belongings close to the water rides?

4. Since we will have express passes, is a touring plan necessary?

Thank you in advance for all your help!

1) I think only IOA is currently offering early admission. Early admission to the new Harry Potter area was offered for a bit right after it opened, but now I believe it is limited to just IOA. You can see here where Universal only mentions early admission for IOA: https://www.universalorlando.com/Hotels/Hotel-Guest-Benefits.aspx

2) If you're there for 2 days and have never been before it shouldn't matter which one you visit first, just make sure you do early admission for IOA one day and get to Universal Studios at least half an hour before opening the other day.

3) You'll potentially get very wet on the water rides. I think they all have lockers nearby but you'll have to pay to use them. Rides that require you to store your items provide free lockers for a brief period, but water rides are not in this category.

4) Other than visitting the Harry Potter areas first thing and returning late in the day if you want, you should be free to do whatever you want with the express passes. It's one of the greatest amusement park perks anywhere!

How wet will we get on the water rides in IOA?

You will end up with ALL the water on you. Plan for it.

No there are not lockers at the waterrides. There's a thing in the center of the raft on Bluto's, like at Kali if you've been to AK, and that might help. Otherwise, pay for a locker somewhere or bring things in waterproof bags. Or dress in wicking clothing (down to the unders, because a dry shirt/shorts and wet bra/underpants isn't cute!) and perhaps change out the shoes if you're wearing socks and laceup shoes.

Since we will have express passes, is a touring plan necessary?

I've never found a touring plan needed when we're staying onsite.

What worked well for us with the HP stuff is getting to the park about 20-25 minutes before scheduled early entry to get in line. We went straight to Forbidden Journey and rode it twice - once through the regular line and once through single rider (there was just DH and I). Then rode Dragon Challenge or Flight of the Hippogriff (this isn't necessary since Express Pass works for DC and the Hippogriff line is usually not bad so if you want to ride FJ twice through the regular line, that should work too) before heading to the Hogwarts Express. As soon as we got to Diagon Alley we went to Gringotts and rode that once. This way, we got all the rides in with short to non-existent lines and could then decide what we wanted to do (explore Diagon Alley, head back to explore Hogsmede etc).

And yes, prepare for soaking wet on the water rides.

There are absolutely lockers near the water rides, they aren't at the entrance of them like other areas, but they're very close by, and yes, you have to pay to use them. I recommend stripping down to the care necessities (eg, remove any extra layers like a sweater or light hoody/jacket) and maybe even remove socks if you're wearing sneakers, then pop them back on when you dry off a bit.
I wore a lot of gym type clothes in the parks because they dry so quickly.

1. PP is correct - for a while now, its only been one park offering EE and I believe its IOA right now. It would be on the web site.

2. Doesn't really matter. Some people like to do it the way Harry did it in the movies by going through Diagon Alley first and then riding HE over to Hogsmeade. Since IOA will have EE, you'll want to take advantage of that so might make more sense to do the the headliners there first and then go over to DA. We did rope drop at both parks to hit the main attractions without long waits and it worked out well.

3. Soaked. Yes they do have lockers but the lockers next to Ripsaw Falls cost money - they aren't the free ones. We opted to rent one anyway because we didn't want to get our electronic wet and we were glad we did. Soaked to the bone. We left the park and went back to RPR afterwards to change our clothes.

4. We didn't have a formal touring plan but do keep in mind Forbidden Journey, HE, and Gringotts do not have express pass. You'll need to do those early to have a minimal wait.

I found Orlando Informer very helpful.

We are going next weekend too - our first trip :) For water rides, I have waterproof pouches for our electronics. I arrive around noon so my plan is to check in and leave most stuff at the hotel. Enter the parks in our dryfit gear and flip flops with minimal extra stuff stored in our waterproof pouches. Head to the water rides fairly quickly (maybe stopping at a couple of other rides along the way with our Express Passes). Then after we are done, back to Hard Rock Hotel to jump straight into the pool.

Thank you to everyone who replied to my post! A lot of helpful information. I will report back upon our return. :flower1:

If you are staying onsite the water taxi's leaves about 7:15 or 7:30 for early park opening for onsite hotel guests. The early time openings can be confirmed through hotel. We usually do the water rides right before we head back to the hotel in the afternoon. One of those cheap rain ponchos you can get at Walmart will lesson the drenching somewhat. I would suggest Universal Studios as the first park to visit as Diagon Alley is less than a year old and is probably going to be the busiest.

One more question. I just noticed that both parks open at 8 am next Friday. So I'm guessing that IOA will open at 7? Will people be lined up at 6:30 am to get in?

I also noticed That on the schedule that it opens at 8 am Friday. All onsite guest should be able to enter IOA one hour before it opens to other visitors so if it's says 8 am then yes you should be able to get in line by 6:45 to enter at 7 am and the water taxi's should accommodate that. To be on the safe side call your onsite hotel you are staying at the night before. They get updated times on park openings daily. If your at the Portofino the number is 1-407-503-1000.

Water taxis start 30 minutes before Early Entry time for hotel guests.

Another newbie here:

We are 4 adults here (spouse, parents and I) planning our first trip to USF and IOA. Got p2p 2+1 day tickets.

- We will be staying at Sheraton vistana this weekend - an offsite hotel. What would you recommend for off-site guest on when to line up? No express passes.
- We may not do lot of roller coaster rides. Just the HP train and other 3D/4D shows. Should we too start an hour before park opening?
- How ahead of time should we start if the park opens at 8 am (for rental parking, walking, wait in the line etc.)
- Saw only first part of HP movie. So should we go to Diagon alley first?
- Planning to take wheelchair option for parents. Would that slow us down?

Thanks.

If you are staying off site I would leave your hotel at least 2 hours before park opening. I don't know how close the Sheraton Vistana is from Universal if it's pretty far out maybe sooner. The reason why is you will have to park your vehicle and get to the entrance of either park. There is a map at the bottom Of the Universal Orlando site in the blue section under plan your vacation. This will kinda give you an overall view of the parks. If you have to rent wheelchairs that will take a little time. The hike in from the parking is a pretty good walk. Maybe someone else can help with the knowledge of the closet place to the parks you can drop your parents off at while you go park the car so they don't have to walk from the parking. I have only had to approach the parks from the parking area once and that's been years ago. I usually take the path or the water taxi now from my hotel. I noticed the parks open at 9 am this weekend. Weekends are usually busy. I would go to Diagon Alley which is located in Universal Studios first since this is the Newest Harry Potter Park. Then onto Hogsmeade that's located in Islands of Adventure the one that opened in 2010. The train runs between both Harry Potter Parks. Some suggestions for a lunch. Mytho's in islands of adventure. You can make reservations under the dining section on the Universal site. The Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade and Leaky Caldron In Diagon Alley. Have you thought of renting scooters? Yes wheelchairs will slow you down a bit. It's going to be hot and who ever is pushing them is going to get tired. Stay hydrated and remember to take rest breaks. Enjoy yourself. I think it is awesome that you are taking your parents. Spending time together is making memories you will never regret. Have fun hope this helps.

Thank you so much for taking time to respond.

The map shows its about half hour drive. We plan to arrive early to the park and take a break in the afternoon. Then come back in the evenings and leave to the hotel later evening/night. The plan is to prepare lunch in the hotel when we take a break. Is this feasible at all?

Will we miss anything big time if we take afternoon break and come back after 6 pm to the park?

As suggested, will first visit Diagon alley and see how far we can go after that.

We were just there for the first time last weekend, and a great piece of advice I picked up here - I think maybe from macraven? - was to wear dry-fit type clothing, especially if it's going to be hot outside and/or you plan on doing the water rides. I found dry fit shirts and underwear on sale at Walmart (Target has ok prices too but their women's dry fit short sleeve shirts right now have a very funky fit/cut to them), and took a couple pairs of running shorts as well as 2 pairs of swim/board shorts that I already had. I dried out pretty quickly after Jurassic Park and Ripsaw Falls (I came out looking like a wet rat on both of those rides, so I don't know how anyone could ride either one and not get fairly soaked), but my husband's khaki shorts and regular cotton underwear were still damp a couple hours later (he listened to me on the dry fit shirts but he did not believe me that our butts might get wet on the water rides). I also found the fabric to be more comfortable during the hottest part of the day than a cotton tank or tee.

Like several others above have already posted, taking advantage of early entry is huge for cutting way back on wait times in the HP areas, so I would try to do those first, and then if you're staying onsite you can use the express pass on most of the other attractions later. For example, the first day we left RPR about 40 minutes before EE, had a 10 minute walk to the gates at IOA and I think they actually started letting people in around 10-15 minutes early. We had only a few minute wait for the headliners in Hogsmeade, and since Hogwarts Express usually starts running around 20-30 minutes before US opens, we were going to take that over to Diagon Alley around 8:30. Unfortunately they were having problems and did not know when it would be back up, so we left Hogsmeade about 15-20 minutes before US was scheduled to open. It took about 10 minutes of brisk walking to get to the US gates and they were already letting people in, but it was still not crowded at all in Diagon Alley and we only waited about 5-10 minutes for Gringotts. After that, since it was just the two of us, we did the single rider line on Gringotts and were able to basically walk right on several times each day, even in mid-afternoon when the wait times were at their peak.

The lines for Ollivander's are also much shorter in Diagon Alley than in Hogsmeade, so my husband and I ended up being the only two people in our group and we both had wands "choose" us (yes, we're big nerds!). And, since Harry actually got his wand in Diagon Alley and not in Hogsmeade, you're technically being more accurate if you go to that Ollivander's :) So that is another way to save time.

Also, if you are able to work it into your plans, I also read somewhere on these boards that the HP areas are very cool at night, so the first day we did all the HP stuff first thing, rode HE back over to IOA and did a few other rides there, took a break the first afternoon, came back around 5 and used express pass on things like Transformers and The Mummy (loved that ride!), ate dinner and then went back to Diagon Alley. It was not crowded at all and everything looked so neat after dark, especially the dragon. Some of the interactive wand stations are cooler at night too. We had breakfast at the Leaky Cauldron and lunch at both Leaky Cauldron and Three Broomsticks, and all three meals were great (Bumblebee Man's Taco Truck in the Simpsons area was also good).

Other than just having a rough plan for the HP stuff, we did not end up using a real touring plan at all for the trip. I definitely made some, but since the express pass made it so easy to just hop on a ride without having to schedule a fastpass window, we threw the plans out within the first hour and just did what sounded like the most fun at that moment. If you don't have the unlimited express pass, then you might have to do a bit more planning to minimize wait times, but if you have the pass, you really don't have to plan much at all.

They really did a fantastic job on all the HP areas, so even if you get stuck waiting in line for a bit, there are so many details to absorb and we had fun discussing various aspects of the books and movies that were sparked by seeing those little details. Have fun!

yes
i always advise peeps to consider dry fit clothing.

makes life a lot simpler when doing wet rides at the parks.

We do a lot of dry fit clothing whenever we visit any theme park :) And it's a definite must if we are facing any water rides.

Do they actually make dry fit underwear for men??? My hubby hates water rides bc he doesn't like walking around in wet unders afterwards. :p
