As lacool said, there are
DVC information desks at each resort, each park, and at Downtown Disney, and you can stroll up to one of them, get some information, and set up an appointment time. I was there during a very busy time (the week before Easter), and had no problem getting an appointment to fit my schedule. Plus when you stop by one of the desks, they often have a small incentive, such as a meal for your family. (They will make a note on the card they give you, and the DVC rep will give you a set of vouchers at the end of your tour.) The tour itself is pleasant, and relatively low-pressure.
They also provide childcare during the tour if you need it!
Yes! They have a nice little supervised room with videos, video games, coloring activities, snacks, etc. My two-year old daughter stayed with my wife and I during the tour, but our boys (5 and 9 at the time) went into the children's room. They are typically very shy about getting dropped off somewhere, but they went right in and were not at all excited about coming out!

And that's after being there over two hours! (I was pretty much convinced by the time I took the tour, so we went straight from the tour into the paperwork!...Hence the extra time involved.)
Enjoy your stay at VWL.
