how and where does everyone get the cool pictures in the side bar and in the body of thread? I have no idea where to start in creating something fun. where do you get the cool pic??

There are many different sites to get avatars (picture under your signature to the left) and great pictures. If you go to the technical site of the main page, there are some threads you can read that give some suggestions.

If you want to get an easy start.....press "quick links" above, go to "edit signature", go to "edit avatar", pick a picture and you will see it in your signature to the left.

Under "edit signature" is also where you will copy and paste pictures into the body. You will need a host site for this. I use http://photobucket.com. If you need further help, just let us know.
