Do most people carry around a video recorder and a still camera? we can't decide if we should take both to the park. My dh and my 2 dd and I will all be on the same rides and didn't know if you take video recorder with us on water rides or leave them some where? sorry if this sounds like a dumb question just wasn't sure. Thanks

I take mine with us. I put it in a ziploc bag first and then inside my backpack. That way if you get wet, it usually stays dry. In DCA when on the grizzly, you get soaked! They have lockers near by if you think you should lock it up.

I took my video camera on my trips to WDW. I had a good camcorder case and used a plastic bag for water rides. I also had a 35mm camera.

This year I am just taking a digital camera. It was a bit of a pain carrying the video camera around.

I think it depends on what you want to do. You could rent a locker and leave the video camera there if you don't want to lug it around the park all day.

We take both. Dh carries the video and I carry the digital still. He doesnt bring the video camera everyday. I always take the still and average at least 100 photos a day. I have a small nylon camera bag. It keeps the camera dry enough on most of the rides. I put it in the free locker for Grizzly River, rather then risk it. The camera bag doubles as my purse. I put my money, credit card, and a small tube of sun screen in it.

In the past we have taken both the camera and video camera, although we use the camera more. We are lucky now as our still camera has a good video camera on it as well so this time we only need to take one. I'll make sure I get a zip lock bag from work though to keep it in so it doesn't get wet!!

Excellent thread...

Speaking of, do they allow video cameras on all the rides or will a CM ask you to stop filming?

On our last trip I took the video camera, but only carried it into the parks 2 out of the 4 days. It worked well that way. I taped the HSM pep rally and parts of BPB, and some other stuff for the kid, but it was too heavy to carry all the time.

We usually pick one day to be "Photo Day". I take the camcorder and digital camera and take all the pics that I want to take. This way I do not have to worry about the camera's or lug them around everyday.

I would hit the photo board with this one. Brother has a combo cam and hates it. His still are just not as good as my little pocket cam.

You might want to consider going the other way- getting one of the still cameras that will also take video. Personally, I find that I'm more willing to accept a cut in quality on my video than I am on my still photos. Earlier this year we bought the Canon Powershot SD900 to use as a compact camera when we don't want to carry our Rebel XT camera and/or video camera. I've been quite pleased with the output, and took some really fun video of my family on the rides at Disneyland with it.

Last year we took both our still and video on our trip, but we only carried our video camera in one day...this year, there is no way i am packing the video camera...i have a great camera that takes amazing pics and pretty good video, but i am going to get a new still camera that takes amazing pics and is known for taking really great videos...i gave my husband the video camera last year and he took lots of long, pretty boring video  ..we hardly watch it, what we do watch is the short clips of the kids on the maliboomer taken by my still camera.:cool1: ..i like the shorter clips, we rewatch them all the time...I actually gave my dv camcorder to my daughter for her birthday present-this is what she wanted for her 16th birthday, it was almost new and was 1000 dollars so i got over the guilt of giving her this instead of something new...if you dont mind packing both, then taking two isnt too bad, we just prefer to pack one that can do both...HAVE AN AWESOME TRIP!

One year, we brought our camcorder (VHS-C) but didn't use it for anything.

Last year, we brought both the camcorder and digital cameras. My mom filmed parts of Fantasmic (can't remember if she filmed Small World). I can't remember if filming in rides is allowed... I'm inclined to think it officially isn't?

My digital camera can also take short video clips - I took a few clips while riding Dumbo, Splash Mountain and Peter Pan... the quality isn't as good as it would be on a digital camcorder (or stand-alone camcorder) but for me, it's good enough. I only watch the clips from time to time on my computer anyway. I can at least tell what everything is supposed to be... except during dark rides like Pirates (but I don't know if a stand-alone camcorder would be able to capture it anyway).

If you have a digital camera, and film during rides - there's no real way for CMs to tell whether you are taking pictures or video. Although to be courteous to others, you can turn off the LCD screen (I think some sites suggest this) but I usually don't.

In the same vein, some camcorders can take still photos so technically, someone could be using a camcorder to take photos, not video... so there's no way to really tell.
