Does it matter what month you buy? I will usually go to WDW in early December. Are you able to put in a reservation before you get your points for that year? example the month I get the points is in july would I be able to make a reservation at my home resort 11 months early of December which would be in January even though I don't have points in my account? Thanks

As a fellow newbie just dipping my toes in the whole DVC pool, my answer may be lacking, but I believe you can borrow points from the upcoming year. So based on my understanding, yes you would be able to make that reservation.

Edited to add information from another thread.
From a post on Use Year:

"Use year determines your banking deadlines, but it has nothing to do with when you can make a reservation. You can always call (or book online) 11 months prior to your desired check in day for a reservation at your home resort and 7 months prior to your desired check in day if you want to reserve something at a non-home resort. You do NOT have to wait until your use year begins to make a reservation - actually all of your points are already in your account. You just have to have points available that will be valid for your desired stay."

If you haven't already, spend some time with this thread:

Understanding Use Year

If you consistently travel at the same time of the year, a "good" use year will give you some free "insurance" if you have to cancel a reservation. For eample, if you usually go once a year in early December, then I'd choose October for my use year (in case you want to start a vacation at the end of November once in a while). There are no use years for January, May, July, or November. The linked thread explains more and gives examples.

I personally don't pay that much attention to use year as it is better to buy a great contract that is at the location and point size and price you want.

There are several UYs that provide some good insurance for early December, and I see no reason not to have a preference for such a contract if one can be found.
