Newbie Question - Borrowing Points

We just bought a DVC membership and I have a question regarding borrowing points.

2014-250 pts which we banked to 2015
2015-250
2016-250

We have a room booked at the VGF but not out total stay, we are currently waitlisted for the other 3 nights. We have used 212 pts thus far. If I decide to book another room for the whole stay at the 7 month mark for 315 as a backup we are over our 2015 pts by 27.

When I cancel one of the reservations do I lose the 27 pts that I had to borrow to book both reservations?

Hope this makes sense.

Borrowed points retain the UY you move them too. So in your case the borrowed points will become 2015 points and cannot be banked and will expire at the end of your 2015 UY. If you borrow points that are less than or equal to the number of points needed for the WL you can make sure by contact MS to see that when the WL comes through the borrowed points are used first on the WL dates. Then you can bank left 2015 points into 2016 to replace the borrowed points.

Lots of changes occur at the 7 month mark. As owners that are booked at their home resort sometimes switch to other resorts. So it is possible that your WL will come through. Regarding booking a second reservation, are your missing nights at VGF scattered, or all in a row? If together, I would definitely make a reservation for those dates at another resort. And leave your wait list active for the VGF nights. Then if the WL comes through it will cancel your second reservation for the missing nights and add the nights to your VGF reservation.

if you cancel, they will try to free up 2015 UY pts (if they were used in that reservation) which could then be banked forward into your 2016 UY (assuming you are still in your banking window).

if banked or borrowed pts are all that you can free up, then those will drop back into the UY of the stay (2015) and expire at the end of that UY if not used for another stay by that date. (so you won't lose them automatically, but you would need to rent them or something to get some value out of them if you are not staying again in your 2015 UY.)

Be careful how you do this. If you have only 1 waitlist, I'm guessing you didn't have it set up to "cancel an existing reservation". I believe if you modify it, you go to the bottom of the list. So if you book the other reservation for 315pts, you'd have to borrow. When your waitlist comes through, it'll automatically borrow.

Tho one time they did hold a room that came through the waitlist and called me to see if I wanted to cancel an existing reservation first.

Not a big deal to borrow if you'll use more points this UY or next UY.

Are you against a split stay? If not, why not book the 3 missing nights at another resort. And, then add another waitlist for one night at VGF that connects to what you have. Set it up so it cancels one night of your back up reservation. If that comes through, then you can amend your other waitlist to two nights, and do another one night at VGF. This way, you may be able to get those 3 nights by doing it one night at a time. I have had success getting what I want this way.

Thanks everyone for all the replies! Currently we have 6 of the 7 nights in a lake view room and have the last waitlisted. I went ahead for now and have the 7 nights in a standard view waitlisted. I'm not totally against a split stay but with 7 people going it makes it a little hard to pick everyone up and move.

And, if it is now just one night, I think your chances of having that one night filled are better. I would also stalk the website occasionally because it may be possible to snag a room that way. I have, even when I had a waitlist in for the same night...someone must have canceled the room and it showed up online before it was taken for waitlists.

Waitlists don't happen live, often you can book your own additional night before the waitlist are even matched which I have been told is at night after MS closes.
