I'd like to purchase 12 to 15 one time use points for November 2022. Can I purchase them ahead of time and have them in my account waiting to go at my seven month date? Or do I need to call and have members services do it for me on that seven month date?

You cannot purchase OTUPs more than 7 months in advance and you actually have to make a reservation at the time of purchase.

To get around it, you can call MS and make a reservation no more than 7 months from now and purchase OTUPs. Make sure that the reservation is at least 31 days into the future, preferably more, because you're going to cancel it and you don't want points going into holding!

Once you've canceled the reservation, the OTUPs will appear in your online account. When it's time to make your November reservation (which is no more than 7 months away), you can book it online using the OTUPs.

You have to call and buy the points as part of the process of making a reservation at seven months. Usually I book what I can online at 8 AM at seven months and then call at 9 AM to add the night that requires the OTU points.

To add, if you decide to go the route with making a fake reservation to have them in your account, be sure that trip is in the same UY as your November trip since OTU points expire at the end of the UY they are bought in.

For example, if you had an Aug UY, you’d want that pretend night to be Aug 1st and beyond since your November trip would be part of your 2022 UY.

If your pretend night bought with OTU points was in June, then it would be no good because once canceled those points would expire by end of July.

Thanks for the tips. I need to learn all the tips and tricks. My use year is October. I have a November and February trip booked. I'd like to add one night on the front end of either trip.

With an October UY, you have to book that pretend night after October 1st so the OTU points are in your 2022 UY.

So, if you decide to get them ahead, just find a night close to the number of points you want to buy that is available, call, buy, book and then go online and cancel..

The OTU will now be there for the morning of the 7 month window for you to book at 8 am.

Or, just call that morning at 9 am and buy then, unless you are worried the room won’t be there.

I’m newer than new (since I haven’t even received my resale points quite yet), but I’ve been reading many of your excellent responses here, and I’d like to prepare for my membership by taking a “pop quiz” before my real world “final exam” in mid June. Grab your red pen! Here goes:
My UY is December. My contract includes the 2021 points, and I’ll bank them asap because my first DVC trip will be mid January 2023. I want to purchase a few OTU points to be ready for my mid June booking window date. To accomplish this, I will call Member Services, no sooner than May 1st, for a reservation date after December 1, 2022 and purchase up to 24 OTU points for this booking. The next day I will go online and cancel this reservation. Now the OTU points will be available to use in order to book online when my mid June 7-month booking window opens at 8am for my mid January 2023 DVC stay at any DVC resort with availability (except Riviera). I will click on an onscreen option in order to use these OTU points.
Well, how did I do? Thanks in advance for your expert critique!

Another question about the actual process…
I just purchased 24 one time use points and the guest services explains the details for you. Be prepared to write this down .
They did not tell me my points would be temporarily placed into an OKW Contract and would not be visible when I logged in.
I called back and their explanation is that is the way they do it.
So now it looks like a have an OKW contract with no points.
I do not have an OKW membership .I am hoping when my 7 month rebooking window opens all the information will be accessible for me to book. Until then I have no clue what to expect.
So I hope somebody has more advice and explanation that has recently purchased . Does any of this make sense?

This is what my online dashboard was before and after purchasing 24 one time points:

And this is the only reference to OKW and only appears when I :
“Plan my Vacation “ option

Are they “sourcing” OKW points for increased profit value?
Otherwise I have no explanation .
Except it is DVC

The 24 OTU points came from an OKW contract. That is why they show up in your account. When you buy OTU points, they could come from any resort. They are not creating points out of thin air. The reason it looks like you have no points is because the points are being used in a reservation. If you cancelled that reservation, the 24 points would appear in your account to use.

I did cancel the reservation.
I assume they will be available again during a 7 month window hopefully.
Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.
It was just unexpected to see OKW Contract

The previous posts described the process slightly different .
I just tried to help the new member understand and It is important to write down Member Services legal agreement at time of purchase.
Also important to remeber the Use Year technically expires on the last day of the month before your Use Year.
So August Use Year points purchased would expire on July31 .

If you canceled, it is odd that the points aren't showing up as available in your online account. You can test this by trying to book something (without actually finalizing the booking) within 7 months (and they also need be before the end of the use year) and see if the points are there to select when you get to the page where the contracts are listed. If they are not there, you will have to call to book.

Perfect score! The only piece will be what is available Dec1st if you call May 1st. But since you will also have those banked 2021 points in there, it doesn’t really matter what you book. It could be a GV for 90 points. Buy 24 OTU, use the rest of your own points, and once canceled those points of yours are back!

Thank you so much! I think I have a handle on this because if your fine info!

OTU points come from any points owned by DVC/DVD.

That is the reason the rule is 7 months or less so they can give you whatever ones they want. It is not always OKW,

But the temporary contract will always be whichever resort you are given and only show up, as you discovered when you go to book

You don’t see them in your dashboard because it is not something you own. It’s not part of your membership but are transferred in points.

So you will only see when you go to book. You know they are there because the resort they came from will now show as one of your resorts.

The resort you get has nothing to do with what resort you are booking. They simply add points from any resort.
Thanks. I have never used them as I have a bad case of addonitis!! I did not know if you made the fake reservation (inside 7 months of course) and then cancelled it would give you the 11 month window at that resort from where the otu points came from but it sounds like this would not be a factor.
