newbie, needs support for first on purpose shop!

Had put this in another thread, but thought better of it.

I too have made the decision to head into the land of scrapping. With 7+ trips behind me and 3 more planned, and over 2000 paper and digital photos, I have a lot of work to do, lol.

Love idea of the swaps, will join one soon. Saw the Cruise Swap1 and WOW! I am allowed to borrow ideas from that?

Have been collecting supplies for several years, but have been chicken to make that first page. The shopping has been fun so far. Have acid free glue, die cuts, cardstock (need more, hitting Micheals on Tuesday) Have some 8'x11' papers, but really like the space provided by the 12x12 option. Have some Disney scrapping stickers, small papers, and frames. Have a trimmer, and some punches. Have some wire, bought for another project lots left.

Need:
Lettering: are stickers best to start? Love the style options at my local store. Can you print on vellum from wordart in Word, with an inkjet printer for titles?

Tags: is it best to get stencil set to start and use the cardstock? or buy pre made.

Eyelets: love the look they add! How expensive is the eyelet tool, generally?

Trim: ribbons, and fibers, right

Brads: love the options in colour and shapes

Rub ons: should I grab some or hold off until I know what I want to add to the page? Some one should make a printer rub-on paper, that we can print in reserve and add our own quotes, or have they already?

Is there a web-site that show how to make basic pockets, tags and envelopes, etc?

Sorry for all the questions but you ladies seem to be up to the challenge. This will be my main question site, as I live in Canada and all the scrap stores are at least and hour away. And my work week is Thursday to Monday, so no crop lessons for me!

SO many of the questions you raise are going to be dependent on the individual scrapper's preferences. But I'll give you my 2 cents worth.

Lettering: Most of us, myself included, use a variety of lettering formats. I'm presuming you're referring to titles here and not journalling. I use stickers, my sizzix, stencils I have, and some hand lettering. A couple notes - when buying stickers ALWAYS get at least two sheets. Otherwise, you will find yourself without a key letter at a critical time. With stencils work on the BACK side of the material and REVERSE the stencil. This eliminates pencil marks. One way I use stencils most often is with the less than fab photos (blurry, etc) of an event. But when you cut letters out of them that isn't noticeable. Vellum is tricky to print on.

Tags: whether or not you need tags depends on what you plan to do with them. I have used very few myself. I either journal on the page itself or do matted journal boxes.

Eyelets, brads, ribbons, etc: Can't help you much here as I really don't use this stuff. Tend to stay relatively flat in my pages.

Rub-ons: I've tried a few but have not been pleased with the way they worked for me. If I'm going that route I prefer the stickers.

To print on vellum, make sure you get the kind that says you can print on it with an inkjet (unless you have a laser printer, then you need the laser printer kind) It does need a little bit of time to dry. I also found that the ink kinda bleeds, so if the letters are small (journaling) it can be hard to read. I haven't figured out why it bleeds... maybe it was just the brand of vellum I used. (your mileage may vary) So it might be a good idea to have a few extra sheets to play with.

There is make your own rub on paper -- you can use palette paper or page protector/transparency(on the smooth side, opposite of how you would make a transparency).. there are lots of instructions over at 2peas- but basically you flip your image - mirror image and then print, let it dry and rub

Everything else, is kind of your own opinion.. you certainly can make beautiful layouts without all the embellies (embellishments) -- Use a 40% off coupon for tools like the eyelet setter ~20?. I've never quite got the hang of eyelets and so I've stuck with brads.

Rather than buying a bunch of stuff your not sure you are going to use (colors and such) and trying to make your photos and layouts match your stash, try taking the photos you want to scrap, to the store and buying the things you need for the layout/pictures you are going to scrap. You might find it easier to get over the initial hurdle of starting a page.

You can use 8.5x11 or 12x12 binders to get over the idea of having to plan out a whole album. Just scrap the pages you want in any order, then you can buy your album and reorder them later.

I would definitely take your photos to the store and buy to match. That will help you not to overbuy. I think newbies find stickers the easiest to start with, and I still use them a lot. Almost any other lettering technique will take a lot more time, so if you aspire to be a speedy scrapper, start with stickers!

Tags are easy to make on your own. When I was starting out, I bought one package of them and used one as a template to cut them out of my own paper.

Eyelet tools are not expensive, but those cute things can add up when you can't control yourself! You will need a setter, a hole punch and a hammer. I used my husband's hammer for a long time.

Trim and brads are fun, but be careful not to overbuy. Let me tell you, it's very easy!

I print on vellum all the time, but I do know that some people have problems with it.

Rub ons are fun, but there are the same disadvantage as using stickers (running out of the most used letters). I have made my own with a transparency and the ink jet printer and it was easy and fun. I think someone posted the link to the directions, which were originally from scrapjazz.com. My friend also bought some transparencies with writing from someone on E-Bay. They were baby ones with the month, places for pictures, titles and quotes: very cute. Of course you could make your own.

Saw that rub-on d.i.y on scrapjazz.com will be using that one, have lots of great fonts and that will really cut down on the need for lettering.

What is the best material to transfer to with the d.i.y inkjet rub-ons?

You were a little late on the brads and such, just made my first online purchase, all brads and eyelets, I threw in a couple of great vintage style disney stickers. oh my! But I need some for a swap and spent less then 20.00 and these should see me though my first couple of books. I checked out the shops online in Canada, not that great a selection, so ordered from bargian pack. They had great selection and no extra cost for the size of my order to ship to Toronto.

Love 2peas already, that site gives me such inpiration. Ia m going to work at this one (or two) page(s) at a time for now, I am looking at doing mostly travel photos, so disney, DVC and DCL will be the focus for a while.

Does anyone else do a quick sketch of what they want on a page before shopping? I did this for my ideas for my first swap and it really stopped me from buying too many packs of paper, even though mikes had card on sale, I only bought three packs. (2.50/pack)

i am a rubon junkie...i just love them, so i am here to defend them!!! some of the companies out there stink and i won't buy those...rub ons are so easy though.

as far as getting started, i would say to go and take a class...like a scrapbooking 101...that was what i did. i collected alot before and read before i did it myself. i think that helped. however, i found that i have a ton of stuff that i would never use on my pages because of collecting before hand. using stuff before you buy it helps too, like tools. ask somebody what they think of something before you buy...that helps before you end up wasting money, and not end up using the product.

eyelets, brads are the best...little way to add something to your page, plus useful for attaching stuff.

what ever we all are saying is good, but you have to figure out what is your style and you won't figure that out until you start...so jump in. start with classes...that way you won't feel like you are doing it wrong...which there is no wrong...

Yep- I sketch, before and during.. I bought plain white 4x6 index cards and divider tabs at the office store and a index card box to hold them (~ $5 total) I journal and sketch in my spare time.. watching tv, before bed, while DH drives.. then I sort them into the box.

I will also sketch a little in the middle.. to figure out the matting, sizing, or lettering placement.. I'm picky/perfectionist so it takes me forever to finish, but the sketches really help. Check out Becky Higgins, sketches book or search 2peas for it (and in the gallery) for placement ideas.

Sometimes it helps to get your ideas together, and have a plan

Actually need to get going, I am in my first swap! I have loved looking at 2peas, those layouts are awesome! I love the retro look, so I think a lot of my designs will lean that way. I will stick to cardstock stuff for the the time being. I was layout editor for my high school yearbook, I loved it! So scrapping is bringing me back to a time I loved!
