Newbie Mini Meet Idea

I emailed Marsha the following info as well.

Here is my idea.

Every AM before the Convention starts, have an AM Newbie mini meet (Dec 2, 3, 4???).

Match up 3-4 Newbies that are staying in the same hotel with a "DIS CON mentor" (a veteran). I would set up the groups. These folks interact with each other this fall and meet at that day's AM mini meet.

Here the only problem I have. I won't be getting in until Dec 3 evening. Someone would have to host the early meets for me.

What do you think?

Last year, many folks felt intimidated but ended up having a great time!!!!! The disadvantage that the Newbies have this year is that the veterans all know each other so that makes things a little harder!!!

Hi OkieDisney!

I don't think we have met before! Neat idea you have!

I totally understand your concern about the newbies being comfortable. Last year being the first we were all newbies and my concern was mostly for the solo travellers, many of whom had not travelled alone before or met anyone from the DIS. I set up a solo travellers lunch meet at Akershus before the opening reception and also made a solo travellers table available at the reception so those arriving alone and overwhlemed could be welcomed. Once about 17 of us had been jammed into one boat at the Maelstrom we knew each other pretty well! *laughs* I think Patrick has pics!

I wanted to do something like that again this year but my work schedule has been so crazy I haven't made any plans yet. I want to be sure I can see it through.

I wanted to do another lunch meet and was thinking about Teppanyaki... but I just don't know... if you would like to put your head together with me I would love to help out. I might be able to help out as a host depending on what I am able to book as far as flights. Please do not hesitate to PM me...

Nice to meet you!

Oh, and by the way... in my experience it takes about eight seconds to get comfortable at DISCON. Everyone is there to meet everyone and all the newbies will have about a gjillion new friends as soon as they show up.

Taryn, awesome idea.....

I would LOVE to work with you. With our crazy work schedules, it will be great to work with someone else.

The reason I thought to at least do two days is to get those that come early a chance to get to know others. And those of us that come late a chance to know others.

Karen

Karen,

I agree totally. Make a meet or meets available before the opening reception which is so big and intimidating if your are new (It's not really like that but I know I was scared last year!). I am trying to arrive on December second and will be staying at the Dolphin.

Please do be in touch though, these meets are dear to me and I would love to help or share ideas.

Here's the only picture that I have (online) of the solo meet

And yes, all of us fit in ONE boat!!!

Welcome to the DIScon commando planning madness Karen.

Karen, I have to say, Taryn is slower than most. :sunny: ;)

(j/k, Taryn ;))

Karen & Taryn and everyone else

I am flying in on the 2nd so I am available to help and it would be great to get involved as a newbie myself - give me something to do;) -

Let me know, nothing like diving in at the deep end

Sam, great......THANKS

(Did anyone else notice that Karen and Taryn rhyme....HA HA)!

:D

This could be fun....I haven't been to DISCon but I have done alot of "MEETS" (hey, I'm from the Chicago area!!!!!! ROFLMBO). I would love to attend a "solo's" meet, maybe just for one day so I can do other things also.....

And I'd love to be a "mentor" to someone......not a DISCon mentor but a DISMeet mentor perhaps....I use to be shy...I'm a bit intimidated about going and meeting all these people but heck, you only live once and there are so many people I've gotten to know that I can't help but be overexcited and since I've got my plane ticket now can't wait for December to get here!!!!!

What a great idea! I'll be happy to help host a newbie event, since apparently I'm now a veteran.

And I have to admit, the Akershus/Maelstrom event was such fun! I know that somebody took a picture of all of us on that one boat. Was that you, Patrick (PatinMN)?
