Hey Folks
We have a Feb trip coming up at the Fort. Hauling a 43' 5th wheel, stopping overnight both ways at Savannah Lakes campground to keep days to a max. 6 hr drive. This will be our 1st long trip with it.

So my question is, what are your favorite loops at the Fort for this size camper? We will be doing requests in a few weeks and I would sure like some input from the veterans here!

Hi @jimmytammy

While I can't help you (my A-Frame is 18' long), you might help others answer you by giving them an idea of what you're willing to pay for. The Premium Meadow campsites (most expensive) are wide and big and close to the Meadow Trading Post, Meadow Pool, and Campfire/Movie arena. The (plain) Premium sites (less expensive than Prem Meadow) are the same size but not as close to the core Meadow area but that might be okay with folks who want to be able to easily walk to the MK boat (for example).

There are sites in the Full category that can accommodate your camper but if this is your first trip out with the new rig (congrats), you may want to go for the Prems to start with and learn by.

Choose your price point then decide what's important to you in terms of location within the Fort. I will say regardless of size, a campsite on the outside of a loop/circle is easier to back into than one on the inside. You can "request" a specific loop but when you arrive at the Fort (and check in early and in person) ask for an "outside" site in your requested loop if you don't initially have one assigned.

But as for other details about big rigs like yours, I will defer to others.

Bama Ed

PS - if you check in before your pre-assigned campsite is ready, the Cast Member checking you in normally won't tell you what the site # is before it is ready to receive you. But I think if you patiently explain "long camper, first trip with it" and ask for an outside campsite, the CM will try to accommodate you if you don't already have an outsider assigned to you. Yours would be a reasonable request. (but still wont' tell you the #). They will text you the site number when it's ready.

PPS - of course, this is where I HAVE to thrown in a clip from Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez's movie, "The Long, Long Trailer". In this scene, they are visiting family on the way to their honeymoon while towing a long trailer in a cute city neighborhood and Desi tries to back into the family's driveway.

Sorry, just kidding. I thought this was humorous when I got my popup.

Thanks Ed! We saw that movie recently, hilarious!! I can see everyone directing me backing and getting a good sideshow:rotfl2:

We have a Premium(plain) sight booked. So as Ed mentioned, anyone here have suggestions as to which loop(s) you like best in this category?

We have a 40' motorhome and pull a long bed 1500 Ram Crew Cab pick up... Our favorite loops (which are the "Premium" category) are 1100, 1200, 1300. Some of the other loops that I think you shouldn't have issues getting into with your 5th wheel in addition to the ones that I listed are 600 & 700. If you want or need based on what's available in the "Premium Meadow" would be 1000, 900, 800.

Hey Duane,
I noticed you are in Raleigh. We live in Burlington, about an hour drive west of you

Hey Neighbors, nice to meet you!...

My wife and I are originally from Greensboro, but have been in Raleigh for about 38 years. We still have friends in the area and travel back and forth frequently.

We've have been making the journey back and forth to the Fort at least once per year over the past 25+ years in everything from travel trailers, 5th wheels and motorhomes.. If there are any questions on routes or good places to stop along the way, just ask!

Our next Fort trip will be in March, and hopefully (through daily perseverance of hitting the website) can "bridge" the front and back end of our Halloween trip in October of this year.

Been to FW many times with both a 40' and 42' 5th wheel. First question is what did you book? Full hookup? Preferred? Premium?

For Full Hookup I would side with 1700 or 2100, both of those loops where easier to manage. I have stayed in the 1600 but that loop was TIGHT to manuver though plus parking.

Prefered sites I have always liked the 300 loop and had not stayed in the others.

Premium, I really like the 400 loop for ease of parking and location. Though have stayed in the 600 and 1100 loops, those are now the Medow$ premium loops. I would stay on the 600 loop agian though, even though its quite pricey.

Our OP gave us this info in post #3. So they are eligible for 400, 500, 700, 1100, 1200, 1300.

Apologies everyone, I just went back and checked my post and realized I must have zoned out... I accidentally put in the work "preferred" instead of "premium". I went back and corrected my original post....
