Ok, I have read through many pages of threads and I still have questions.
I have a family of 5 (Me, DW, DS12, DD4, DS3) and we are not members of any DVC program. Can I use DVC even though I am not a member? Do I just rent points or reservations?
You can rent points from a DVC member. Many are listed on DisBoards under DVC Rent/Trade. You'll need to post how many points you want to rent and where you'd like to stay. I believe that the DVC member will have to check the availability with the resort and book the reservation for you.
(nitpick: technically, you are renting a reservation, as points by themselves are no good to you.)
there is a link to the pt charts for the DVC resorts at the top right of the webpage. go there and see how many points those nights would cost for a room at whichever resort you prefer. (you will quickly notice that weekend nights are much more expensive, also be aware that rentals come with limited mousekeeping and usually have limited-to-no options to cancel the reservation. and you will be unable to speak to MS directly about your reservation, the DVC owner will need to make any arrangements for DDP or ME for you.)
take those pts and multiply by $10-12 to get an estimated cost for rental.
but before you dive into the rental board, please read this link first:
Most members make their reservation 7 to 11 months out, so you wouldn't be able to find anything left for almost the rest of the year including the first two weeks of Jan. You might find a day here and there, but not 5-7 days all at once.
Disney doesn't get involved in this reservation if you have any problems. It's between you and a individual who is a DVC member.
We are looking at the End of February as we are trying to get away for Mardi Gras, so hopefully I am planning early enough. I saw the DVC on other post in DISBoards, so I figured I would do a little research. Thanks for the tips, keep em coming.
