WASHINGTON (AFP) - The New York Times called on President George W. Bush
to apologize to the American people for going to war on Iraq
after an official probe into the September 11 attacks found no
evidence linking Iraq and al-Qaeda.

"Now President Bush should apologize to the American people, who were led to
believe something different," the Times editorial said.

"Of all the ways Mr. Bush persuaded Americans to back the invasion of Iraq last
year, the most plainly dishonest was his effort to link his war of choice with the
battle against terrorists worldwide."

Wouldnt THAT be nice! But we know Bush would never admit to his own mistakes.

Here's an idea - how about the NY Times apologizing for printing something that is patently untrue, such as this:

after an official probe into the September 11 attacks found no evidence linking Iraq and al-Qaeda.

I won't hold my breath on that one...

:sad2:

AirForceRocks - I like your idea, but I won't be holding my breath either...

Hmmm...

Bush and Blair both say there was a connection.

Who to believe? The NYT or Bush?

Gotta go with Bush.

Do you mean the New York Times: Ivory Tower of Ethics? (cough Jayson Blair cough cough)

The NYT didn't say it; they reported it (as did every other news outlet in the world). The idependent comission that the Bush administration put togther said there was no connection.

Probe finds no evidence to link 9-11 with Saddam

By CURT ANDERSON, Associated Press
June 17, 2004

WASHINGTON - Rebuffing Bush administration claims, the independent commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks said Wednesday no evidence exists that al-Qaida had strong ties to Saddam Hussein...

No, the commission did not say that. They said that al-Qaeda and Iraq had not worked together on 9/11 or other attacks against the United States.

Apparently the NYT and other media outlets can't distinguish the difference.

Please explain this difference.

Please explain this difference.

You've got to be kidding me - you can't see the difference between "no evidence linking Iraq and al-Qaeda" and "We have no credible evidence that Iraq and al-Qaeda cooperated on attacks against the United States"?

Why would the commission say there were no ties between Iraq and al-Qaeda when in the very same report they indicate ties?

The NYT lied, pure and simple.

I agree. The NYT is a rag.

I heard one of the 9-11 commissioners on O-Reilly admit that the newspapers were wrong and there was a link between Al-Queda and Iraq but Iraq was not directly involved in the 9-11 plot.

So much for a strawman Truth.

And GWB and his administration has NEVER said that Iraq was involved in 9-11. They've said all along that there were other ties between Al-Queda and Iraq.

9/11 Commission Report: See page 5

The independent commission decided to answer a question that never was asked. They decided that they should ignore what was actually said by Bush- that there is a link with Al qaeda in general. Out of the thin blue air they decided to investigate if there was a link to the attacks on 911. Then they said there was no link to the attacks that Bush never claimed!!!!!

White House Statements on Iraq, al-Qaida

Comments by President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice alleging links between al-Qaida and Iraq under Saddam Hussein:

2002

Rice, Sept. 25: "There clearly are contacts between al-Qaida and Iraq that can be documented; there clearly is testimony that some of the contacts have been important contacts and that there's a relationship here. ... And there are some al-Qaida personnel who found refuge in Baghdad."

Bush, Oct. 7: "We know that Iraq and the al-Qaida terrorist network share a common enemy - the United States of America. We know that Iraq and al-Qaida have had high-level contacts that go back a decade" and "we've learned that Iraq has trained al-Qaida members in bomb-making and poisons and deadly gases."

2003:

Bush, State of the Union address, Jan. 28: "And this Congress and the American people must recognize another threat. Evidence from intelligence sources, secret communications, and statements by people now in custody reveal that Saddam Hussein aids and protects terrorists, including members of al-Qaida."

Bush, Feb. 6: "Senior members of Iraqi intelligence and al-Qaida have met at least eight times since the early 1990s. Iraq has sent bomb-making and document forgery experts to work with al-Qaida" and "Iraq has also provided al-Qaida with chemical and biological weapons training."

2004:

Cheney, Jan. 21: "I continue to believe - I think there's overwhelming evidence that there was a connection between al-Qaida and the Iraqi government. I'm very confident that there was an established relationship there."

Cheney, Monday: Saddam Hussein "had long-established ties with al-Qaida."

Face it; this administration willfully misled the people.

How exactly does one willfully mislead people by telling the truth?

If a president can be impeached for misleading the people about sex, surely something can be done about this.

President Clinton wasn't impeached for "misleading people about sex"...he was impeached for lying under oath.

Or do you consider the term "sworn testimony" to be semantics?

The NYTimes should apoligize for misleading it's readers with it's creative editing. No link to 9/11 does not mean no link at all.
