OK..dates for DVC New York ABD trips out for next year....WHOO HOO..had to cancel one I'd booked this year. BUT..the broadway show is Aladdin..fine, but really want to see Newsies also. and..is there a surprise visit to Statue of Liberty Ellis Island? Must dos for me..so, although the itinerary doesn't mention those things, folks who went this year..were they included? (Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island) I sure hope Newsies isn't closing...

Darn it! I was hoping they'd make these trips available to the general public this year... :(

Sayhello

Sorry to disappoint you, but the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are not part of the trip. Don't worry, you can easily come in a day early or stay later on the last day to go see them. On this ABD, you are sooooo busy each day that you will definitely want to rest when you have the time to do so. We saw Newsies and learned part of one of the dances as part of the ABD in July. It would be interesting to see what they do now that they are doing Aladdin. On the last day, they will transport you to the airport at whatever time you want.

No the Statue of Liberty and Ellis island are not included. Ellis island was not even open in august when I went. To get in the Statue of Liberty you have to get tickets on line and since then only reopened July 4th they were sold out until October. This is a very bust trip but absolutely worth it. I spent 2 extra days post on my own and slowed down. If you are serious about going and the Statue of Liberty I would look into getting tickets way in advance even before you book.

Thanks...We will be coming in a day early and will need to do Ellis Isalnd, Statue of Liberty and Newsies then. We had booked trips to New York twice last year, one ABD and one on our own and had to cancel them both for various reasons..one reason we cancelled our on our own one was the closing of Ellis Island and the Statue from the hurricane. We've never been to New York, this is probably a one time deal, and since my family came through Ellis Island seeing that is a must.
All booked for the September trip and already excited. (I made the mistake of calling DVC the day the Member's Cruise booking opened ...wow...)

You will enjoy. It is a fabulous trip. Just make sure you have good walking shoes. Have a great time.

I live here and looking at the itinerary it's a small bite of the apple but an extremely ambitious 3 days - also probably more than most natives have ever taken the time to see. Enjoy - if you have time go see St. Thomas's - it's kitty corner from St. Pat's on 5th avenue and stunningly beautiful, or stroll up 5th avenue and try for tea at the Plaza ( I think they still do it - not sure last went a couple of years ago), that way you pass FAO Schwartz, Bergdorf's, Tiffany etc., etc.

Have a blast - there is no place like NYC.

Oh yes, The Plaza still does afternoon tea in the Palm Court . It is one of our FAVORITE things to do in the city, and we are technically "locals", from NJ! I would love to do this tour, even though we are 35 minutes away! :-)

Also in the Plaza to the left of the Palm Court hanging on the wall is a painting of Eloise of "Eloise of the Plaza" book series. Today I got a chill when I heard the elections in NYC. I worked down there pre Giuliani was mayor and YIKES!!! Manhattan was a mad house. Crime was rampart and by the looks of it the mayor elect wants to return to that time. I guess if things go down hill ABD can hand out flack jackets with their emblem embossed of course.;)

We did the NYC dreams trip in July. It is a wonderful trip and ABD does a great job. Would love to do it again!

We have many a photo of DD and that portrait of Eloise! They now have an Eloise shop on the lower floor. It is precious! We always stop in, even though DD is 20 now! Lol

For y ou locals..it looks like we may not be able to stay at the ABD hotel for 2 nights prior, only 1 since the Manhatten Club is a timeshare property I guess? Does anyone have recommendations for a hotel close to the Manhatten Club? Like walking distance? so moving won't be too much of an issue?

Where to stay depends upon budget and what kind of a deal (if any) you can get. It is expensive to stay in midtown!

However there are two options I would suggest

The Marriott Marquis - Broadway at W. 46th - right in the center of the Times Square. Easy walk to many of the NYC iconic spots - the Public Library at 42 and 5th, Bryant Park right behind it, Grand Central Station, Macy's at Herald Square (10-12 blocks), the Empire State Building, The Chrysler Building both roughly the same distance as Macy's. The hotel has a theatre attached to it and The View restaurant on the roof. The View does a full rotation every hour and has wonderful views of the NYC skyline.

The other is 3 West Club - a small club at 51st and 5th has a very small boutique type hotel in its space. The rates to rent are not bad for midtown, probably one of the less expensive options. It has the very important location, location, location in its favor. It is across the street from Rockefeller Center and up the block from Radio City Music Hall. It has a solarium on the 9th floor that you can bring your morning coffee up to and enjoy the limited view. You can see the spires of St. Pat's from here but much of the rest of the view is blocked by other buildings on the street. The staff is extremely helpful and informative.

Good luck with your hotel search.

Enjoy your trip - there is no place like NYC!

The Marriott Marquis is our choice whenever we stay in NYC. Location, location, location! If you are a Marriotts Rewards member, the offers are great! Rooms are much more spacious than what is typically found in Manhattan. Doubletree is ok, but has none of the NYC vibe. Waldorf Astoria on 5th is lovely, but pricey.

Is the Marquis close to the theater area? especially where Newsis is? I really have to see that show.

Yes - the Marriott Marquis is in the theatre district at Times Square - all of the Broadway shows are within easy walking distance to the hotel.

There is a group of restaurants somewhere in the 40's on the west side in an area known as restaurant row - many of them have excellent food and a price fixe pre-show dinner. Check them out - it's been a while since I've eaten in them which is why I don't recall the exact street. But they are in old brownstone buildings so the ambiance is really nice.

Restaurant Row is 46th Street between Broadway & Ninth. Newsies is at the Nederlander Theatre on 41st Street. Marriott Marquis is between 45th & 46th Street at Times Square. TONS of restaurants, shopping, and theatre all in walking distance. Safe area at night.

(Saw Newsies 6 times - fun show!)
