Hi!

We stayed in the Grand Hyatt Hotel, right next door to Grand Central Station with the Chrysler Building the other side.

We were walking distance (about 10/15 mins) from Times Square and I'd thoroughly recommend it as a central place to stay. The restaurant for buffet breakfast was excellent, the rooms were a good size (I understand a lot of NY hotel rooms are quite small) and I'd stay there again!

Back in 2000 we stayed at the Omni Berkshire Place on East 52nd at Madison Avenue. Very classy hotel and, whilst a little bit further north than you're probably considering, still within walking distance of Times Square (and very close to 5th Avenue shops :teeth: ).

For our New Year's Eve trip THIS YEAR (woohoo!) we're staying at The Regency (a Loews hotel). Obviously, I'm not in a position to recommend this yet, but I'm hoping it's gonna be cool. This one's a little bit further north again - just on the edge of Central Park at 61st and Park.

I'd recommend the Omni Berkshire and the Warwick Hotel which is in a fab location - 2 or 3 blocks to the Rockerfeller Centre. We're staying at the Warwick again this month between 26 - 29th December but I've also heard great reports about The Library and The Casablanca which are small boutique hotels. Try www.tripadvisor.com for some great up to date reviews of hotels everywhere and also www.fodors.com for their message boards.

We came very close to booking the Library, but eventually decided against it - those rooms really are teeny weeny! :)

Last year we stayed at the Courtyard Manhattan Midtown East
866 Third Ave - we liked the very spacious room which is unusual for a NY hotel.

We chose it as it was located conveniently for the wedding reception we were attending and it is well placed for looking round Manhattan. We didn't spend any time in the hotel really - apart from the rooms, reception and the restaurant for breakfast there isn't much else, but we just used it as a base.

They only serve breakfast - if you want an evening meal 'in', you can order from an in-room menu and it is delivered from the Outback nearby.

We found reception friendly and helpful and there is a separate desk for tourist advice.

Here's the website, and I would also suggest looking at www.tripadvisor.com as Lisa suggests.

Hello Tyke...

For hotel requests in NYC, budget is often a big factor.

My recos are as follows not necessarily looking for low price, but looking for good value (for NYC standards)

1. Marriott Marquis....world's largest atrium hotel, huge rooms, efficient service, TImes Square location with 150 suites out of 1400 rooms, joining the Marriott Rewards program may land you a complimentary suite upgrade!

2. Embassy Suites/Doubletree Suites....again TImes Square location....nice to have the space of a suite!

3. W Hotel (4 Manhattan locations)...if you're young, hip, cool...you'll love the W...I'm 40 married with two kids and it's a bit much for me (strange furnishings, very dark inside, lobby becomes a bar in the evenings etc....)

4. Rihga Royal JW Marrott
Great midtown location....Europeans rule at this one...very new, bright, clean, spacious all-suite hotel.

Any of the above would be a fine place to stay!

I have a feeling that you guys go to NYC more than I do, and I'm only 4 hours away by car. What's the draw?

I am so glad you asked this question. I am also hoping to arrange a trip in 2005 to celebrate my 40th birthday!!!

If you're looking for a small boutique style hotel, we've stayed at the Muse twice this year, and the second time we were upgraded to a junior suite.

It can't hurt to look..........

Thanks Guys

I will check the hotels out.

As a matter of interest has anyone stayed at any of the following -

Paramount

Time Hotel

Hotel 41

Hotel Thirty Thirty

Ameritania

I have checked out the reviews on tripadvisor but these tend to vary from one extreme to the other !!!

Hi We normaly stay in the Howard Johnson Plaza on 8th avenue & 50th street just a short distance from times square, its only costing us $83 + tax in March 2004 per night booked direct on the Ho Jo web sitehttp://www.the.hojo.com/newyork00924. the rooms are a really good size full size fridge, microwave, coffee maker, iron & board, hair dryer, etc. or we can recommend the Milford Plaza but that one gets a bit dear

Calvin & Anne

We have stayed at the Paramount (very cool and trendy!) and the Drake (on57th and Park)
I love the drake but unless you can get it on a special it is quite pricy.
In Dec this year we are staying at the Roosevelt, chose it after looking at tripadvisor as suggested by others!

I've twice stayed at a place called the Hotel Metro, on West 35th Street, just two blocks north of the Empire State building.

It's an independent hotel, not a big place, maybe 50 rooms, and I really quite liked it. Like most NY hotels, the rooms are, shall we say, compact, but nicely furnished and quite comfortable. I think I paid about £100 per night inc taxes for a double room.

This is the hotel's website :

Hotel Metro, NYC.

:Pinkbounc :eek: :crazy: ::yes:: :bounce:

Am seconding BJJ reccomendation.I've stayed at the Hotel Metro twice, the last time October just gone,I wouldn't even look at staying anywhere else!

It is a great hotel in an excellent position::yes::
