Hello everyone! You all were such great help when I was trying to decide where to sit for the Christmas time Phantom play in NY that I am taking my best friend to as a surprise (shh...) that I thought you might help me in my quest for a hotel room! HAHAHA!!

I have never been to New York before, and I really want to blow him away with this trip--the play, christmas time in the city, central park, that sorta thing--almost romantic, but not TOO much, just a tad. He is a very simple guy, so 5 star hotels that are super fancy are great, but not for this go round. Simple, yet still "wow"ish and new yorkish in flavor, especially if you know it is beautifully decorated at christmas :)

Thank you all so much for your help! He is going to be so blown away by all of this. hehehe

the Plaza is a "Wow!!!" and it's right across the street from the famous FAO Schwartz toy store (think "Home Alone II"). the Waldorf is a "wow". the Marriot Marquis, right there on Times Square, is my choice, though. I love being in the center of the action.

though I'm sure half a dozen other people will repsond with different choices.

We just stayed at the W Times Square which is a funky, small, "hip" place. Now, we are not "hip" by any stretch of the imagination but we did not feel out of place. It's in a great spot and the beds are beyond awesome. They have those special heavenly beds with the wonderful linens. They also have the best smelling shampoo/soaps in the bathroom. They sometimes offer great deals - right now they're running stay 2 nights, get the third free. Just a thought. You'll have a great time wherever you stay.

Wow! Those are all so cool! Im goin to go compare some prices--hed love staying across from that toy store! hhahaha!! Thank you all so much! wow...im not gunna wanna leave!! haha

I always stay at Hilton Times Square. Great Place. Also, may I suggest seeing the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular? That's a great show

Oh, geeze, that looks so cool, what a fantastic idea!!! Oh my, im so excited about this trip!!

"Simple yet wow-ish.":p

Well, the SoHo Grand and the Mercer are what come to my mind for simple yet wow-ish...maybe the Royalton if you want to stay midtown..oh! Or maybe the new Library Hotel! (on Madison and Forty-something...maybe 40th)...but, I'd go with BR though...the Plaza at Christmas-time is New York nice.:)

I have a friend who comes to town three or four times a year (I live in Jersey, she lives in Washington) for business, and when she visits, we always stay in new hotels. So I've got a couple that I can recommend. Maybe you can check prices and see if any of these ring your bell. (Meanwhile, sounds like you're planning a fantastic trip... lucky him!)

The Roger Smith Hotel: This one is near Grand Central Station and is a very cool, eclectic place. Each room is done in a different style, with funky artwork spread through the hotel. The rooms aren't huge, but they are really cozy. The one we stayed in was done like a country inn. There was a bookshelf filled with books, a super-comfy bed, etc. And the breakfast downstairs is very good as well.

The Times: This one, which I seem to remember is near Central Park, is very hip and very cool. The rooms are done in one of three color schemes (Red, blue and yellow, I believe). We had a "red" room (they ask if you have a preference). It's not garish, but all of the accents in the room (around the mirror, the picture frames, the comforter) are in the color of your choice. But the thing I liked most of all about this one was the shower: It was right out of Dynasty, big, spacious and with two, count 'em, two shower heads so the water hits you from both directions. Fantastic!

The Morgans: This one isn't far from the Empire State Building, and was very convenient. One of the things I liked best about it was the basement-level bar, where we went for drinks after a long day of sight-seeing. Now bars change every few years in these parts, but I think this one remains the same, if I'm not mistaken. It's dark, filled with big, comfy chairs, lots of candlelight and mirrors... not fancy, just very cool.

I stayed at the Hudson and while the hotel itself was fantastic (especially the ourdoor bar on the second floor), the room was incredibly tiny. The bed is huge, and getting out of it, say to go to the bathroom, you almost literally had to squeeze against the wall. I guess it's trendy to be packed in like sardines!

The Belvedere, which I think is on 9th avenue, was also really nice. Only a quick walk from Times Square. Oddly, I don't remember a whole lot about it, but I remember really loving it. Guess that's better than only remembering something bad about it!

Have a great, great time!

Richard

Ohhhh my!!! So many choices!!! HAHAHHA!! I love all of the ones you all have recommended!! Im starting to narrow them down by price, keeping below 250 a night if i can. wowie! Can you imagine how cool it would be to be Samantha Brown on the travel channel? She gets to go to all of these crazy/hip/fun/elegant hotels and gets paid for it!! What a deal!!! HAHAH!!! I will definetely let you all know what I choose in the end. Doing my own research too, I found the Casablanca to be very nice looking, though i know nothing about it. Any one know about this? Thanks super duper much!
