The latest rumor involves the possible closing of Disney's TDS on fifth Avenue in New York City. The New York Post reported today, without citing sources, that Disney has been offering other retailers its 40,000 square-foot flagship store.

Disney is said to be offering the space as part of a plan announced last year to close about 100 of its 741 Disney stores worldwide, the Post said. A Disney spokeswoman, Sondra Haley, denied the report, telling the newspaper, ``we are not closing'' the Fifth Avenue outlet.

The store at East 55th Street is in one of Midtown Manhattan's priciest retail areas, with ground floor rents at about $600 a foot, Farley Clark, a retail specialist with Lansco told the Post. The rate for Disney's space would probably be lower than that when its upper floors and basement space are included, the Post said. But with a new store opening next to the New Amsterdam theater in Times Square next spring(which is supposed to be every bit as grand as the fifth ave store), it's hard to believe that they would operate two mega stores in such close proximity.

I was there last September and thought the store was incredible, but that was before all the Disney Stores started going to he## in a handbasket! The Disney Stores should now be an embarrasment to the company. If they can't keep the quality they once were, close them all. I would probably be stunned to see the change in the Fifth Avenue store in the past year.
